Don't know if this applies to England or only Scotland, but each council has a Debt Advisory department. When I got into debt it was due to the good (and free!) advice of my DA advisor with my council that stopped me doing anything silly. She explained to me about there being no bailiffs in Scotland, and that they are not allowed to come to your door if you tell them they are not to, and so on. I would really advise anyone to try their council Debt Advisory department first, they are non judgemental and truly helpful. :) Nobody should ever pay for Debt management advice. And you don't need to be a council tenant to get it, I'm a private renter.
