Good point.

No, we need to think of everyone, not just ourselves, we need to educate everyone to use less.

Even private power sources such as solar and wind are created from finite resources, rare earth magnets come from China for example, solar panels need silicon and glass and lots of other bits and pieces, all need to be gathered and "produced"

So one day these "ingredients" will run out just like so many other finite resourses we currently use to produce electricity.

Which is a near impossible task. I can teach children about saving energy, being eco friendly etc as its part of the curriculum but unless their parents take on board what the children are saying then nothing changes.
There are lots of government initiatives out there from health issues (drink less, eat less red meat, less fats, stop smoking etc) to recycling etc AND still people do not change despite the re-education.
I prep to look after my family therefore I will prep to ensure OUR energy needs are met!

No, I'm certain that's not going to happen, I've worked hard in a transition group for a couple of years now and we've barely scratched the surface - a couple of hundred out of 50,000 in our town. IMO it needs to come to a crunch before we'll see change.

And I used to be such an optimist!

Sadly we will all be suffering when the oil runs out, whether we have prepped or not.

Those who we call friends now will soon become less friendly when they see our lights on when theirs are not, when we have heat and they don't.

Sharing knowledge now is going to be better than sharing supplies later, whether willingly or by force, and when our friends are cold, hungry and in the dark then force may be their only option.

Just want to quickly chime in with an observation if I may.

The end of the world as we know it won't happen before tea time tomorrow.

Just thought I would remind you of that.

That means we have a little more time to think, broadcast, "prep", create movements, educate, assist, make pressure groups, design new technologies and use existing technologies until such a time as they become obsolete but as a stop gap whilst finding new solutions.

We may even be ok :)

If the oil runs out, I will probably approach my hypothetical envious neighbor with a message of "I used to be where you are now. I can teach you how to get to where I am and all I will ask in payment is that you teach someone else" pitch.

That will do some good.

Too late though Nick, read again what you just wrote.

You are where you are at because of oil being available, so "if the oil runs out" how can your Neighbour get to where you are without it? I guess he will just take it off you for telling him that you have what he wants.

Maybe a good time to go and learn about the number of predator groups there are in the UK, if you can find them that is.

Oil wont make the seeds that i will harvest like I harvested the pumpkin seeds from the Halloween pumpkin. The seeds can be shared. I can teach him how to grow them and how to harvest the seeds for the next year.

So that's food taken into account

Oil wont make the wood gas stove that he will be able to make from scrap metal / pottery / clay / mud that i can teach him how to.

So that's cooking technology sorted out, also water heating and in a fuel efficient way.

Oil wont give him the illumination that I can teach him how to make from animal or vegetable fat and plant wicks.

So that's lighting sorted out.

Oil wont give him the relief from flu symptoms and pain that the herbal medicines that i already know of will give him.

So that's pain relief and fever eduction sorted out.

Oil wont give him the collection and storage of water in a clay lined pit (not lined with rubber mind, but clay) and the purification methods using sand, stones, natural distillation and more.

So that's drinking water sorted out.

Oil wont give him clothes on his back either scavenged or made from natural fibers harvested himself.

So that's some clothing (maybe not underwear but something to keep him warm) sorted out.

Sorry old chap, what was your argument again?

The point is that you already have these, he hasn't, he won't be bothered about learning all this when he and his family are cold, hungry and in the dark, he couldn't be bothered before, he won't be bothered now, he will just take from you, then move to the next family who have prepped. He needs to be taught before the event, not after. That is the point, it's not going to be all green and fluffy when TSHTF, it will be dog eat dog those without will take from those with, one way or another.

Ok, i admit it, you are right.

I am wrong.

The only thing to do if the oil runs out completely is to kill everyone you come across and commit cannibalism.
