I live in a town with a population of circa 60000 people. I am the only person I know that is prepping. This is a massive concern to me. I have a wife and small child to care for and wish I had a larger "community" of people to talk to or call on when TSHTF.
Just to put into persepective the town I live in, when it snowed for 2 days last year, the police had to have 3 offices in each of the 4 supermarkets to help prevent fighting over provisions.
I am a member of a local charity orginisation which gives me a larger group of people who I could call on and likewise I have a large group of friends, but none of the are preppers (that I know of) and I do not wish to be in a situation of trading food for skills. I think everybody should be prepping and we come together to utalize our skills as or when TSHTF. Having said that I have no engineering or artistic skills so when it comes to improvising an oven or something I will struggle and my family could lose out which worries me. If it comes to lifting heavy stuff i am sorted though! Lol. Any ideas what I can do to increase my circle of prepping friends?
Community as preperations?

That's what frightens me the most it is not a friendly town (its not that bad but WTSHTF it will be each man for himself). I really want to create a litlle prepper community locally but don't know anybody who would consider doing it (plus I don't want to let too many people know I'm doing it!).bulldogeagle wrote:2 days?- are they all crazy? when we had snow and ice last winter i didnt go near a shop for over 3 WEEKS!Pathfinder wrote:I live in a town with a population of circa 60000 people.

Just a few thoughts Pathfinder...may not be of any help at all. Check and see if your town is part of the Transition Towns inititive. Folk involved with that tend to be interested in grown your own, surviving without oil, community prepardness and green issues like that. I always think that there is something of a crossover between the Transition movement and the Prepper movement and suspect that there are those in 'Transition' who may be Preppers, even if they don't realsie it themselves!
Even the odd conversational 'joke' or lighthearted comment about 'starting to prepare for 2012 now its here' may start a conversation where folk start talking about preparing for situations and lo and behold, you've found folk who may be interested in Prepping, or have been too embarrasssed to say to anyone.
I suspect in a town of 60,000 there will be many who are interested in Prepping, they just keep a low profile.
Just a thought...

What he said. You never what people are into- and there will be more than just you. Find the kind of people who wouldn't have been at the supermarket after 2 days and learn from them. But keep very quiet about yourself for a bit.
I'd like to see some of these town folk dumped up here in winter.. they wouldnt know what hit them!

I've just read an about Transition Towns - sounds very interesting and if I was looking to move areas at any time, would definitely look at one of these little communities.
Re: Community as preperations?
I think the community wont be very important to start with but after a few months they will become more important for growing things. The reason i am saying the community wont be very important at the start is because the only reason you would need the community at the start is for defense or if you didn't stock food (>1months worth) which i have. Defense isn't really a big issue for me because i don't live in a town or a death trap(city) plus i have lots of firearms.
I do believe that if you live in a city then the community will be basically the only thing between you and defeat in your defense unless you have firearms.
Overall i think that living in a rural area such as Scotland will increase your chances of survival.

Just as a word to the wise Aberdeenshire... these forums are accessible to search engines etc so take care when mentioning anything with regards to ******** and defence as this could be viewed as premeditation if, heavens forbid, you actually did have to defend yourself or your family someday.AberdeenshirePrepper wrote:Defense isn't really a big issue for me because i don't live in a town or a death trap(city) plus i have lots of ********.
I am in no way judging or being critical of your stance
