Hi Blue, for your cooking needs you could pick up a gas burner and run it on propane, this would provide heating and cooking eg.:http://www.gasequipmentdirect.co.uk/Sto ... OUBLE.aspx
I've seen a few of these ex mod for a couple of quid at various shows and at car boot sales.

I use propane for welding and heating my garage, propane is the gas of choice as it stays liquid in very cold temps. and comes in a range of sizes.

I also have a small generator that will power the house in the event of a power cut.

if you are sealing the house for drafts in winter a carbon monoxide detector is a must, esp if you have central heating or cooking on an open cooker.

Hi do you have a garden could yo build a bread oven outside much better for cooking as it uses less logs and stays hot for a long time once you have cooked your food pop some bricks in the hand made ones hold heat better and once hot there is your foot warmers for the night i made one for less than £50 so it could be a option for cooking

We're having similar issues, we are all electric (no gas in village) and don't have a chimney either, we already own a briefcase type single ring gas burner stove but were thinking of getting a secondhand boat/caravan cooker with oven/ grill and 2 rings - any advice regarding buying these? also on the lookout for a secondhand superser heater.

hey thanks for the replies all sound like good ideas.

@90. just a thought but why choose one of those when i could pick a folding breifcase style that still has two hobs and cvould have a grill to, i'd expect it to be much lighter than a cast iron jobby?

@danby wye valley huh? not to far away from me :p do you do any deer stalking? and yeah i've got a garden, of sorts, but it's a rental propety so can't really get away with building anything, plus i'd rather not give anything to the landlord when i've left! but my parner is always going on about one so perhaps :p

@hardulph if your village is gas free whats the reliabilty of the electric supply like? eg many power cuts? if you where to get gas appliances have you thought about how feasible it would be for you to get gas delivered or buy and store? have you thought of any back up electric generating devices. eg solar or generator?
