i think there will be an enormous natural die off in the first month anyway, most people have not the first idea how to purify drinking water or make a fire . when the last cans have left the shelves of asda it will only take three weeks . very few will know how to replenish supplies from the wild, and will make frenzied efforts to help themselves to whatever any one who had the forsight to prep has, if they can find them. we now live in a society where from the cradle to the grave we are looked after. we are pretty pampered in this country. i believe its a been a running ploy since the first days of the empire and certainly since 1947 and the advent of the welfare state. we as a nation have been treated as cannon and factory fodder by succesive monarchs and governments.
if theres a war then over the top you go lads!! dont question it , its your duty !! if you do question it then youll be shot. when theres peace, then into the factories ,mines and cotton mills lads and live your short lives lining our pockets.
yes the country changed after the war and we got a health care system and council houses, now people generally wont put their head above the parapet and be counted because the powers that be dont want it. its been bred into us to conform. part of that conforming has been not to question and to rely heavily on the state for everything. very long winded and slightly off topic iv had a bit of a rant , but the above is the main reason we will have a huge die off and little suicide.

For some folk who struggle now I suspect a serious Post SHTF scenario will give them a meaning to their lives that they don't have at the moment. For the majority their mental health will deteriorate and that will push some over the edge. Interesting discusion of this very issue in the extreme SHTF novel "The Road " by Cormac Mcarthy. Beware.... when I was reading it I began to think the best SHTF response was not to bother.

I hope my sense of divine presence & bigger purposes keeps me going until its clearly time the game is up. Victor Frankl concentration camp survivor and psychotherapist suggests it might help (...his hallmark conclusion that even in the most absurd, painful and dehumanized situation, life has potential meaning and that therefore even suffering is meaningful)

Below is a little bit of a review of the suicide issue in The Road.....as I warned spare yourself reading this if you don't have a real need to know.

" In fact, when the mother calmly discusses her own suicide, she correctly predicts these occurrences: "Sooner or later they will catch us and they will kill us. They will rape me. [...] They are going to rape us and kill us and eat us and you wont face it" (56). In some ways, her brutal acceptance of the world-as-it-has-become is much braver than the father's I'm-sure-everything-will-be-fine-when-we-get-to-the-coast brand of denial. Her willingness to murder her own child to protect him from one of the cruelest worlds in recent literature stands in direct opposition to the father, who, when finally faced with the decision, says, " I cant hold my son dead in my arms. I thought I could but I cant" (279). The mother briefly touches on this difference when she says, "They say that women dream of danger to those in their care and men of danger to themselves. But I dont dream at all. [...] My heart was ripped out of me the night he was born so dont ask for sorrow now. There is none" (57). Though she brought her child into the world, she knew the world was no place for either her or him, a fact that the father looks back on with some bitterness."

hi bhakta, the world is odd, people are odd, they do ordinary and extraordinary things , unexpected and dyed in the wool stuff all the time. the womans sense of avoiding the inevitable by killing herself, is ,as i see it one of the odd things.
the old saying that the only certain things in life are death and taxes being true, then why not kill yourself as soon as you become self aware ,at say puberty when you eventually realise your life will surely and inevitably end at some time.
it must also be true that the the quote "they say that women dream of danger to those..etc ".....must have been written by a woman. A woman that may not nessesarily had a great relationship with the males in her life. As a "normal" man ,i find it mildy insulting that ,because ive no concept of the deep emotions involved in carrying and giving birth to another life , that i couldnt possibly sacrifice my own life to save someone elses.!!
i have two children, they are the sun ,the earth ,the moon and sky to me, they are all i get up for in the morning. i cannot countenance life without them. but would not kill them just in case we didnt make it to the coast. the dad was right ,lead life cup half full. : :)

My father killed himself when I was a teen due to mental illness and marital issues, He couldnt deal with the way his life was developing, so in a shtf situation I imagine many people will take their own lives, especially if they have lost loved ones, however there will be some who wouldnt for religious reasons, or just survival reasons, some people deal with things some dont.
I personally believe there would be more murders than anything for many varying reasons survival, supplies, disagreements etc. without the usual fear of comeuppance etc.
I believe also that when war of the worlds was aired on the radio many believed it, and I may be mistaken, but I have been told it caused widespread panic, resulting in odd behaviour from usually reasonable people. So anything is possible.
