I got a solar shed light from my folks, for use in the garge but obviously can be used indoors should I need off grid lighting. Duel purpose. The only problem is its plastic mount is broken *sigh* but I will have it when amazon have sent another and I get hubby to help me put it up. (Well someone's gotta hold the ladder  )

Birthday pressies, the book is very good and covers everything, but also encourages you to customise for your own situation.

Got my Mrs an engraved Ontario Ranger Afghan knife for Christmas, and got two new Maxpedition Jumbo Versipacks coming tomorrow (were supposed to be here for Xmas but got delayed due to no stock) to "reformat" both of our EDC arrangements (always striving to improve modularity, reduce the need to have duplicate items, and reduce weight).

I figure the Versipack will allow us to remove all of the typical EDC gear from our BOB and INCH packs as we'll be able to carry those on our backs while still carrying our EDC on the waist. Also got a couple of Pistol Belts so we can carry more gear (or have a more practical gear arrangement anyway) on our EDC. The Pistol Belts also have the advantage of stopping the Versipack from bouncing against our hips when moving quickly (makes sense when you think about it).

Also got the Mrs a DOAN magnesium firesteel, a stainless Mora so she can help out with food prep (don't use Carbon blades for food), a LifeSaver 4000UF purification bottle (can purify 4000 litres of water, doesn't use chemicals, and makes literally and fresh-water supply safe to drink, no matter how dirty the source). Got her a set of NV goggles (expensive, but amazing), a Gerber Suspension multi-tool, and a Nikon D90 DSLR.

Not sure what's "the best" out of that lot, but I figure if anyone's fishing for birthday/xmas-2013 ideas.... ;)

Can I ask you a favour SJS, will you please post a review of your Versipack Jumbo when it arrives? I like the look of them and had fully intended buying one next week but I think il hang on and wait until you have looked at yours  if your not comfortable doing a review for the forum could you pm me?

No problem... I'll happily do a review once I've got them, kitted them out with the EDC, and gone for a walk in the forest (field testing, so-to-speak).
Oh... I will have to ride in to Ipswich first because I want to get rid of the Nalgene bottles and replace them with non-insulated Stainless Steel (boil water in the bottle... an option you don't really have with plastic)

That means I'll also be able to discuss some less-common considerations of these packs: how well they travel at high speed on the hip (I'll give it a go, might not be so good but an interesting test either way), how compact they are for bikers, and (knowing the weather here) whether they remain waterproof at 70mph in apocalyptic rain.

Anyway, yes... I'll do a review (and take some photographs... possibly a short video overview). I have very high standards, so if my review is positive you can consider it lore :ugeek:
