This is probably the best way to plan, no man can survive alone, make sure your water comes from a bore hole (hand and electric pump) and your sewage goes into a cess pit and your sorted, as far as your other half, ake them live without electric and water for 48 hours see what they think thenHamradioop wrote:My Plan is to move away from the town to a village and get involved in the community before SHTF. Biggest stumbling block I have is the townie I married who does not have a clue and hates villages as they all want to know your business

80,000 From London that is, then you have the 30,000 from Birmingham, 20,000 from liverpool, 20,000 from manchester -add the rest of the major towns and cities and it soon mounts up, the reality of it is that this country doesn't lend itself to bugging out unless you already have a bugout location already built and defendable as far from any town as possibleTriple_sod wrote:To be honest I reckon it's impossible to really know how such a situation would play out,
Looking at it purely mathematically though, the further away from the big cities you are the better.
London had an official population of 8,174,100,
Lets say 80,000 of them decide to try there luck in the country
40,000 for whatever reason only make it 20 miles
25,000 make it 50 miles
10,000 make it 70 miles
4,000 make it 100 miles
and only 1,000 make it further than that.
Well if your 150 miles from the capital then you only have to worry about an element of 1,000 (for arguments sake 400) rather than the original 80,000,
Unwise advice from my grandmother - Don't worry, it might never happen and if it already has it's too late to worry.

Re: Ideal habitat for survival long term.
The way I look at survival and preparedness you start with the most likely scenarios, job loss, (CHECK) short term disruptions,
so you sock up on food and other essentials, (WORKING ON IT) start to get out of debt, (HELL NO, IF SHTF THEY WON'T NEED OR GET WHAT i OWE THEM) put money away.(HARD BUT TRYING AND GETTING THERE)
Move out to stuff like economic depression, serious pandemic, prolonged civil conflict, (I BELIEVE ONE OF THESE WILL HAPPEN - GOTTA PREP HARDER)
this is where you start analysing your wider lifestyle, where you live, how you earn a living, moving towards being more self-sufficiency.
The problem I see within the 'prepper community' is we tend to want to skip right forward to 'TEOTWAWKI' (HOPING THIS WILL BE A TEMPORARY AWKI BECAUSE i'M NOT IN A POSITION TO PREP FOR THIS)

Jammy bugger - you're living my dream23pioneer wrote:I wasnt even interested in prepping until i had kids, i left the army sold up and now i live on a small island with 12 months prepping stores, and 7 acres this enables me to plan longer term, planting tatties, neaps, onions, etc..if tshtf i am in the best place to survive, if it doesnt hit the fan at least the kids grow up free and safe. but the best thing of all is the people i share the island with, winner winner chicken dinner,

Well yeah obviously, being X number of miles from London isn't any advantage if your just down the road from another major city, but even so, if the situation was grave enough better to bug out 10-20 miles down the road than try to 'bug in' slap bang in the middle of it?Patglazz wrote: 80,000 From London that is, then you have the 30,000 from Birmingham, 20,000 from liverpool, 20,000 from manchester -add the rest of the major towns and cities and it soon mounts up, the reality of it is that this country doesn't lend itself to bugging out unless you already have a bugout location already built and defendable as far from any town as possible
Living at your 'bugout' location already built and defendable as far from any town as possible is of course the ultimate ideal but for those of us who aren't there yet would be a case of just doing what you could.
Re: Ideal habitat for survival long term.
With the whole distance issue:
Where I live normally is in Greater London, which is right on the outskirts and we're actually Kent in our address but we still get called London sometimes. That house is rough 1 hours drive from central London,1 hours drive to Canterbury, 1 hours drive to Grinstead, 1 hours drive to Essex, 1 hours drive to Surrey... you get the idea.
No matter where you go in England there is going to be a town or city in close distance, then if we consider what every person in a 100 mile radius will plan to do it's no doubt that they will either:
a) Stay in the city
b) Move to another city looking for friends and family
c) Move to the countryside
D) Those close to ports, airports and the channel tunnel will use those to try to leave the country or those by army barracks may try to seek shelter and help there
In reality I think it would be difficult to avoid people all together because no matter where you go you could very well come across looters and gangs so it's something to think about as you prep, acquire equipment and modify your BOL or your house if you're going to bug in.

Re: Ideal habitat for survival long term.
When people run out of supplies they go out looking for them, first the shop, then next door (+alotments and fisheries), then the next town or woods. the woods will not only be full of camps but will be cut down for fuel. If you are in a biulding or own land you have a head start but will face the same problem of looters. So keep supplies hidden, have a defendable possition and be able to use what others over look.
for example how many have rat traps in there stores for urban hunting or know how to power a lighbulb from a phone line.
I would like to own an off the grid homeasted so no matter what happens i could live a good lifestyle for next to nothing

I personally. Would suggest woodland walk about 2 or3 miles far from any footpaths and build a simple a grand log cabin fit a hydrolic ram pump.
