More logging this week....... and cutting down a couple of neighbours' * 'dead' trees this weekend. The log store is already sufficient to last into the New Year.
Veg garden only just starting to 'look' much. We are eating the last of the leeks (we had a good year, so good we are all 'leeked out - if you'll pardon the pun). Salads are ok but early potatoes are still at least a month away from being lifted - we had such a wet Spring I don't think I planted the spuds till April, a month later than usual.

* with his permission I hasten to add ;) We share the wood

Today I will be sowing seeds for Winter cropping, mainly salad stuff, in the polytunnel. Then I am bottling 60 bottles of homebrewed red/white wine, fixing my favourite single speed bike, and then...

Sorting me fishin' kit. 'Cos today is the start of the UK river fishing season, and I am going fishing in the morning. Really looking forward to it.

OH has just completed another wood store which means our wood supply is read for the 2014/2015 winter. :D
Garden looking good, although very slow. Very impressed with toms and cucumbers in polytunnel so we will getting another one.
Practised bread cooking in the clay oven so finished product is now edible and not too burnt on top.
Continuing to add to food stores.
Added empty 2l pop bottles to water storage - to be filled if we have a heads up of no water (running out of space to put filled bottles).

Will be applying for shotgun licence so currently looking for gun cabinet.

I'm just quietly getting on with it, keeping my ear to the ground.

Lots of bits and pieces but they all add up!

Getting a great crop of strawberries (from just 6 plants from last year) in the cold frames - other salad coming along but also slow as preppingsu said!

Bought a dutch oven this week - been looking at them for ages. Having a section at the bottom of the garden turfed next week to be made into our own little 'outdoor cooking and living' area. Plan to put a stone circle for fire pit in the middle (hence dutch oven)... may invest on a tripod too!!

Also booked a taster archery and air rifle lesson - it's a surprise for partner's birthday - we've been saying we'd like to have a go at archery for ages!

That's about it this week, but planning on getting a few more staples for mylaring this coming week!

Tidied up the load of tinned food under the bed into types. Tins of meat, potatoes, carrots, peas and kidney beans. Also used the activity to do some dusting / hoovering under the bed.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quantity of tinned foods I had and now it looks so much easier for me to be able to make a decision as to what I want to eat when the time comes and it will give me a better feel for what I have to buy more of.

Being tidy appears to be a good idea when it comes to stored foods.

As quality canned meats are in short supply, I am going to dust off my canner and do some proper canning so that I can have home canned meats to add to my selection.

If I get a personal SHTF, then I am sure I will survive for two months what with what I have in stock in dry goods and tinned goods too.

Really only starting this week so my preps probably seem pretty simple but I'm quite excited to get started :)
- Research what I can grow in limited space.
- Clear out cupboard in kitchen and reorganise to make more storage space.
- Make shopping lists of what is needed so I can check off if I find anything anywhere.
- Research way of storing bulk buy food on a budget.
Dont think Ive ever been excited to gut the kitchen before

ccmummy, those first steps are really important - the more stuff you have, the more you need to be organised as to where it is. And as for the list of stuff to buy, especially if you see it while you're out - yep, still got it, still look at it, its a really valuable thing to do.

Yesterday was an exception for me, I made a special trip to buy some bio-ethanol for a little hobo stove.

starting small, I've put together a small kit for my car, reflective blanket, food rations, folding shovel etc
if I get stuck somewhere I reckon I'd be ok for a day or so

next steps will be something a little more substantial

Hehe - I still get a bit over excited from time to time when I re-do this activity. This was my prep activity last week - I emptied each kitchen shelf, cleaned, dated checked and decided what I was going to use and what jams/jelly and preserves I was going make to go back in the spaces I created! You get a certain satisfaction from knowing that you've done a job and feel a tad more prepared. Starting small and keep going, little by little. :)
