Still working at building the fitness. Got up to 40 minutes on my cross trainer and have promised myself that when I hit 45, I will start doing it every day rather than every two days.
Tidied up my stock of tinned foods and have started to think about a plan for getting more in.
What Preps are you doing this week

Re: What Preps are you doing this week
Well, I've just made my first sales on ebay. Netted £35.00 altogether. So that's a little something to put towards the prepping budget. I will probably spend it on 2.5l stacking jerry cans for water, meths, oil and vinegar.
Am thinking about having a bug-in trial day, during which I shall use only stores, cook on my camping gas stove, and no electricity, gas or water from the mains. I shall even - how much of a sacrifice is this? - refrain from my computer and stay offline. It will be interesting to see what difficulties that all entails, and whether my 2l/day water consumption estimate is realistic.
Giros are due at the end of the week. I'll be getting some nice canned curry x 2 from asda, (£3.00) 2kg rice (80p) 750g salt (30p), cooking oil (90p), zippo lighter fuel x 2 for starting fires (£3.50), spare can opener (£1.50) Total £10.00.
Best wishes, 2RM.

I to have had a tidy up on the prepping front it has all gone off the boil of late what with one thing and another, I have more or less decided to use or store shed for our preps (after some adaption and modification), we are fortunate that power is already installed also a water supply, the big mods will be security and insulation. Does anyone else use a shed for this purpose?

I did, but lack of insulation and temperature fluctuations caused a moisture build up on my tins, so back into the house.
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

Here's an obscure one.
In a fortnight I'm away backpacking around Oz.
I'll be able to see how I handle constantly being on the move, carrying everything I own, doing small jobs just to get by and also a few months of farm work.
So that's camping, practicing construction/labouring skills, practical learning of farming techniques + refining people skills (the one I've let slip the most since being unemployed for so long).
Hopefully a few months of mining outside of Perth will cover the travel costs if not leave me with a couple of £ more.

Preparing to distill more ethanol fuel for the stoves / ethanol fireplace this winter in case of problems with heating / power when the time comes. Gonna store it in my 1L kilner jars. Long term high strength ethanol (85%) does corrode the lids a lot, but it wont be in therefore more than a year so I shall be more then ok.

Yep, I converted a brick outbuilding, ooh, ten or more years ago. Shelved it out, dry lined it and put in a couple of freezers. Hooks from the ceiling for onions and it works a treat. I got the idea from a tv show that went to rural Italy. Over there they all have a storage building like this for home grown and produced food. I kept the bare brick floor to stand my buckets of salted beans and brewing buckets. Oh , and I keep my home brewed ale and wine racks out there. It works well for us.arnieh wrote:I to have had a tidy up on the prepping front it has all gone off the boil of late what with one thing and another, I have more or less decided to use or store shed for our preps (after some adaption and modification), we are fortunate that power is already installed also a water supply, the big mods will be security and insulation. We have a walk- in pantry in the house, and as stuff is used we replace it from the outbuilding( we call it "The Bunker")it took some work to get to this point, but boy!, did it pay -up earlier this year when life went 'Pete Tong'!
We just did our weekly Tesco online shop. 'Cos, I run the "Bunker", I know what is needed, or not. Saves a fortune, and we maintain stock levels/ proper rotation.
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

Hi Jansman, with your stock rotation what system do you employ? because our shed is not very big 6'x8' I will have to build some sort of can racks otherwise I feel it could get out of control very easily I need to squeeze a freezer in there as well and water if I can. As you can see it will be very tight going.jansman wrote:Yep, I converted a brick outbuilding, ooh, ten or more years ago. Shelved it out, dry lined it and put in a couple of freezers.
