Be Prepared.
Plan like its the last loaf on the shop shelves.
Plan like its the last beer in the fridge.
Yesterday afternoon, the local electrical substation caught fire ( ) and took out the power of a fair chunk of the local area. All the traffic lights were out, homes lost power, one of the local schools had to evacuate via a fire exit because the automatic front doors wouldn't open. Luckily because it was still light, there weren't any accidents. Power in my house was back on before I got home, but some people had nothing till late in the evening. So... I'm making winter power cut plans this weekend! I'm a bit screwed because so much of my home is electric. Gah!
Im not doing anything big or different at the moment. Sure I have tested my commercial bioethanol in my alcohol stoves and the flame height on the brass trangea was fantastic and even scary. Much bigger thany with methsor home made ethanol. Naturally the flame was more visible than methylated spirits flames (probably because the alcohol was "designed" for fires and therefore flame colour is important).
The rest of my effort is still trying to turn my comparatively weak body into something that has more strength. I don't care that much for what i look like in the future, but i do care for general physical ability, balance, co-ordination and the eventual development of real physical strength that works.
One thing that I have noticed about working out is that it makes you need your sleep. there is no "i wanna stay up late" anymore. I HAVE to sleep as the body needs to do its thing. I am taking multivitamins, protein powder (pea protein), amino acids as well as a magnesium supplement to help the work out and the slow development of muscle, which, considering that I was Mr Pipecleaner before I started, is noticeable (if only to me!). Ok I am not developed, but I am hoping that I will be better in the spring. I have kind of graduated from Mr Pipecleaner to Mr Pipecleaner and one elastic band.
The way that i see it at this stage is its about health, circulation, cardio system, posture, digestion, immune system, prevention of some illnesses etc.
Its quite fun in a kind of sadomasochistic way.
The cross trainer's resistance strap broke through over use and I have fixed it with some jute rope that I had lying around. Resistance straps cost money on the internet, and jute rope is cheaper. Ok its a little noisier, looks rubbish and wont be a permanent fix, but it does the job for the moment.

Been busy making chutney, pickles, jams and relish for the past couple of weeks. Almost through the bumper harvest from the garden.
Some will be given away as presses, the rest will cheer up dull winter sarnies and cold meat dinners.
Next week is apple picking, in our garden and someone else's, then apple pressing to make juice and possibly cider.
At this time of year I wish I didn't work full time. There is so much to do to get ready for winter!
Getting ontop of my allotment, digging, moving things about, planning for next season, and buying packets of discounted seeds from the garden centre (all Sutton seeds were down to 50p a pack and most the use buy dates weren't till after next season's planting - June+)
(P.S - Very nice Pseudonym btw I am now wondering why I never thought of that in our last home that had one of those hideous 1970's gas fires)

Today I am continuing the Autumn clear-up of my garden and greenhouses. Also got to hang a new gate at the back. Security will be an issue now the days are shortening. Ordered my seeds for next year ,and have a fallen tree to deal with in the field next to my (very) smallholding. Half a day's work, but about 3 months worth of fuel!
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.
