I do think there are genuinely some impoverished households out there and I feel lucky every day that we're okay but I also see some households where money management is completely absent.
I also know people who apparently cant afford to eat but have the big telly, the mobile phones, laptops, gym memberships, sky tv. All of which we dont have apart from phones with sim only deals to make it cheaper because those things are considered a luxury and not a necessity.
I dont think the government have a clue whats going on in the real world and they never seem to help those that genuinely need it. As far as Scotland is concerned central government havent a clue where it is and I have met some southerners (no disrespect to those that live in the south) who have no idea that there is anything north of Birmingham!
re; the jaunt to scotland im right on the border anyway and also related to an ex-rangers player, can i get in too?

I think the new breed of politican hasn't a clue about real life Lisa. School to uni to selection with no real job, no-hands-getting-dirty/being knackered real work ever.
Re chaotic households, my daughter is one of them
The amount of money that goes into that house - and then right back out on rubbish - is unbelievable. She's 1200 ft up in a stone cottage with only coal fires.. all-electric kitchen and frequent powercuts.. Yet she wont buy a camp stove because she has no money/nowhere to put it. She wont get a store of food in because she has no money/nowhere to put it. She got a breadmaker and loads of flour to save money but let the flour go damp and mouldy & couldnt be bothered with the faff of making bread. Got hens had them 2 months, got rid because they were "a nightmare"...ie she had to get up early to let them out !!
Yet she got a 50" plasma telly last week, with surround sound and blue ray DVD player. All rooms have tvs and playstations and Xboxes and wi-fi. They run two cars and use £80 a week in petrol - going up to Tesco every morning for breakfast after the kids are in school .

There`s the crofthouse itself, a three roomed chalet I currently use for work, a large stone barn that could house man or beast, and of course, local sources of fresh water and beef/lamb on the hoof if nobody minds poached meat
See, I`ve been in dire straits on more than one occasion, once whilst leaving a battering ex husband, and once whilst leaving him again after I`d been stupid enough to go back! With no female relatives left at the time, I had nobody to take me and my bairns in. Got a place in a woman`s refuge, but...well, maybe folks know what they are like, well intentioned though they are.
So I remember what it`s like to feel the world literally all against you. I remember how folks turned away from me when I had nothing, as if it was catching.
I personally think economic crisis is going to bring the country to it`s knees, and things will only get worse on the poverty front from now on. And even folks who feel fairly secure and that they can ride it out will be affected. I know there are plenty who squander money like water, but there`s also plenty who don`t yet are still trapped by poverty and will probably only see things get worse. It`s one of the reasons I looked online for prep and survival sites
Hope one of ye does bring sweeties though if it happens. And maybe chocolate.

Fab thread BTW, just catching up.
RD is right about rent and moving - you need to pay a month and half up front to get into rented. If you rent out your house there is no guarentee of good tennents (been there, got the t-shirt and trashed flat!! )
Not all letting agents give you all your deposit back if the house is good and clean. Last house we moved from we had to fight to get our full money back and we had redecorated as it was bl**dy awful!
