Thinking about winter 24-25....

Dehumidifier running 24/7, never reaching target. Is supposed to remove 10l per day in ideal conditions, but it doesn't do even half that.

This might seem like a simple solution, but have you gave it a good clean recently?
Last time I gave our dehumidifier's filter a proper scrub it went from a full bucket every 2 days to almost twice a day. I thought it'd only save 6 hours at most.

I didn't know you needed to. Was dusty. Seems quieter now. Manual says I'm supposed to do it every 2 weeks. Oops. But it never filled up more than once a day, even when it was new. It did reach target sometimes, but not very often. Humidity might have been lower.

Got a good load of seasoned firewood at hand and a big pile that needs a little longer.
Rowan trees are heavily laden, they say that's a sign of a hard winter to come.
plenty of stores to us through.
Does anyone know if you can use central heating oil ( kerosene) in old pariffin lamps?

I have it's not quiet as clean burning as lamp oil and a bit smellier

Heating oil also burns nice and clean in the Chinese diesel heaters

There's the small matter of my central heating being out of order I haven't broken into the preps yet, but I confess I'm a bit chilly. My usual plumber is booked for Monday ... let's hope its in time.

Little lads got a new 13.5 tog duvet for his bed he puked all over his winter duvet at the start of spring so it got binned and his summer one put on 5-6 tog ISH £10 in Lidl for a silent night one no brainer at that price

We bought a dehumidifier, if theres no breeze then the laundry will not dry on the line much to my disgust and we usually dry it in front of the log burners but I was worried abput the damp. Happy with it as it seems the house feels warmer and my fitted wardrobe smells less musty. Rotating it around the house at the moment and it seems to be working its magic. When we had to empty PIL house ready for sale as they had gone into a care home, there was very little we wanted but I did find a couple of heavy wool blankets. Not required in the house so far but were used for camping in March. We havent turned the heating on yet, but we have had at least one of the log burners lit most nights. The oil boiler is antiquated but uses very little oil to heat the water once a day. We turn it off when it comes on at teatime. We can heat the house much longer with wood than we could for the same cost of oil given that we do have some free wood which turn up on a regular basis.

We have a ebac unit it works well it's got a smart mode where it cuts in and out as abs when the humidity rises like you say it puts out a fair bit of warmth as well

We have a decent amount of seasoned firewood ready although I would like more . I did add some more unseasoned this week but that will be for the future . The flue is clean , we have gas burners too and enough food just in case plus what’s still in the garden . Pretty much ready other than for putting the wife’s soft top car in the garage as she only uses it during the summer really. That does mean I have to declutter the garage a bit though…
Forecast is for milder weather but with more precipitation so more likely to be rain than snow .
