The wartime cookery book "We'll Eat Again" has a whole section on dehydrating and bottling. How to dehydrate using the airing cupboard, and I want to try it. It also has a bit on canning fruit using a pressure cooker - might try that too but its a bit of a faff.

I'm new so mine is quite extensive!

Literature: Have one or two survival manuals at hand. I can read as much as I want now we're on the grid, on the internet; I can watch videos etc, but I really don't want to be up the creek should I be faced with an OTG scenario — Also a guide to natural flora and fauna to see what's good eatin'. All I know about/have access to atm is squirrels and dandelions, which doesn't make for the greatest diet (I'm mostly vegetarian too, so I wouldn't want to kill the furry little bugger unless I had to)

Water: have NONE at the minute. Desperately need bottled water for drinking/cooking/mixing powdered milk etc, as well as water purification tabs, and some non-potable or drinkable-if-completely-necessary water stored away. I don't have the space to store great deals of water, so I want to learn more about purification - especially rain water, because that's one thing we're never short of in British Summertime!

Seeds: Brush up on my gardening knowledge, have a small seed bank, and a little veg/salad garden on the go for when I can't stomach tinned veggies any longer!

Bug Out: Really assess what I need from my bob, and how I can make it as light weight as possible (I'm weedy and have a terribly bad back for someone my age) - I also don't have a BOL, other than a fresh water lake a few hours out of the city on foot that we could camp at for a while, which isn't the greatest idea but it's a start. I also need to come up with a bug-out route for Mrs Gloomsday to get to my house safely - Her house is a 20 min walk normally, but involves a river crossing which could be a problem wtshtf, with bridge traffic etc. Also she lives in a densely populated area prone to rioting, so I need to get her out of there as quickly and safely as possible.

I appreciate any tips on where to start with any of these things!

little bump on the thread.

i need to buy 2 strings for my crossbows plus spares, and bolts.

i have also remembered a location not far from my house that we found when dog walking that could be used as a bug out meeting point/overnight stay.

so will be going for a reccy and think about hiding a cache there.

im now thinking if shtf it could be a place to go to ,a large woods nearby so could be handy. :|

Just finished reading 'One Second After', and although it's set in the US and a lot of it wouldn't apply as much here in the UK, it still scared the **** out of me and made me realise how vulnerable I am as a student whose current preps are only a few emergency bags and medical kits.

As a student I'm not settled down in one place for very long. That, coupled with a distinct lack of money means I have absolutely no food/water reserves. Renting a house for 9 months a year with uni mates, and staying with my parents for the rest of the year, also means I'm never somewhere that I could begin to make changes to in regards to fortification etc.

Does anyone have any ideas for things I actually COULD be doing now with my time? I know my plan once I'm out of uni and have an income to throw away, but what for now?

Skills, skills and more skills. Books, youtube, quiz fellow students, join clubs etc. But become a student of survival alongside what ever course you're actually studying. In tes of stuff, aim to be able to get home. Keep your car topped up if you have one. If you cant afford to keep buying petrol, just fill it once then don't use it. Build up a stash of food that would keep you going if you have to walk home too. least thats what I would do ;)

Learn to forage. There are books on amazon that illustrate edible UK wild plants. Then go out for walks and make sure you can identify the edible ones by sight. Then pick some and cook them.

All it involves is a small purchase (a book), some long walks, and then free food. Once you can walk around without a book and see the edible items in every hedge and field you will be way, way better prepared than most. Oh yeah, don't forget mushrooms.

Yeah foraging books I got food for free by Richard Mabey after seeing him with Hugh Fernley Whittingstall, true to say as much down to the TV chefs as Ray Mears I'm into that and try and identify things whenever we go for a walk, like TomW said Skills and information, I have manual skills being an electrician and interacting with all the other building related trades, mucking in where I could get away with it, I am lacking in foraging and agricultural skills though, general prepping is limited by money initially but eventually by space, the dream is to escape to the country.
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

Learning to forage, as TwoDo recommended, is a great idea. I'd add learn first aid skills - as a student, you might be entitled to free courses. But there's lots of info on the web you could be collating, including videos, for free as long as you have web access.

And fitness. General aerobic fitness. Any self defence classes you fancy? Its all about skills.

I've started on fitness and self defence. I intend to board the floor in my loft and use it to store food, water, batteries etc
