UrbEx is Urban Exploration, umm, we are a bunch of people worldwide who like to explore the old and abandoned rather than the touristy stuff that everyone else takes photos of. We go into old buildings, factories, mental asylums, ruined castles, underground, tunnels, caves, shelters and take pics so other people can see what we see, before these places are knocked down, filled in or sealed for good.
The un-official motto is, we take only pictures and leave only footprints.

Or a bunch of lunatics who climb tower cranes for kicks, creep around dangerous buildings at night with no thought for our own safety or those who might have to rescue us, and explore underground systems using no safety equipment and without proper training. Depending on whether you're asking for my definition or that of the press. :D

Unfortunately we are in a small minority which is often misunderstood and constantly sensationalised by the press, even hollywood it now seems :( because we would rather take pictures of the inside of a dam than the outside, or an old crumbling (but still beautiful) mental asylum than Buckingham Palace we're frowned upon by the authorities and public. We do trespass (civil offence) but never break in, if there is a gap in a fence, we'll go through it, an open window/door, through it, even a hole in the roof or a service tunnel :) if we do no damage then we can't see the problem with taking pictures. And some large organisations actually applaud what we do 'off record' for bringing to light the plight of some of our respective countries heritage.

If you scroll down this page past the fossils there's a BBC Inside Out feature on UrbEx in the South East which is actually pretty well and fairly written (for a change) ;)

I have pictures of Richborough Power Station, which for many years has been a local landmark and a navigation aid to shipping via the three large cooling towers, last week those were demolished much to the disgust of local residents, but the council knows best and of course needs money so somehow the developers got their way...

I like to think I'm a little left of an absolute lunatic, but a little bit more to the right of a complete nutter, I just like taking pics of old dying buildings and underground places most of the public don't even know exist really. People see the little holes cut into the face of our local cliffs everday but they have no idea what they are or how deep into the cliff they go, so I'll crawl down em and show people. :)

I am looking forward to seeing lots of useful stuff on here from yourself and other members, I hope that the tutorials I have done recently will encourage others to get their cameras out, get out of their comfort zones and do some more to give us all the benefit of their attempts, others will however just sit back and criticise, and add little to the whole experience.
Absolutely agree gnole, I'm still ploughing my way through the mass of information on UKP but have learned alot so far and have also had lot's of food for thought, how to adapt things or what else could I be doing kinda thing. Knowledge is the real power and what will ultimately help us to survive and change things and I'll eat up as much of it as I can, and if what I know can help someone down the line that's cool. :)

Well I know a bit about food storage and preservation, nutrition, gathering, hunting & preparing it and cook a bit too ;) not sure you'll see any tutorials or recipes from me on boeuf 'jerky' bourguignon or baked bean risotto but who knows, risotto di fagioli al forno sounds quite nice I guess and cooking survival rations doesn't have to be boring. :D
