For me it would be my trusty browning x-bolt in 308.

currently a powerful air rifle or shotgun as it is illegal to hunt in uk with crossbow or bow and arrow, but if the shtf i will be switching to the silent weapons ( knives and bows ) and using traps and snares.

once the shtf if your firing a guns the noise gonna attract a lot of interest towards your location.

.22 CZ American with SAK moderator. I shoot sub sonic rim fire ammunition. Zero range is 150mts and best of all no louder than an air rifle.
I have many other rifles and shot guns, but the little .22 is my primary hunting gun.

For hunting purposes that's probable one of the most sensible choices, not too loud and from a skilled shooter not too many shots going off either :)

I would think more than twice about using a bow/crossbow for hunting even in a total shtf scenario, we had a recurve bow when the kids got interested in archery when the school did it for activities week, we got a foam target and took it to a safe place to practice, it soon became obvious that we were playing loose the arrow rather than shoot the target  and at £40+ for a dozen carbon fibre arrows, because the fibre glass ones were causing rashes, my main point is that bolts/arrows at the cheapest are about a couple of quid each, .22 ammo you mentioned goes for between £6 and £9 for 100, air rifle ammo far cheaper again for closer range rabbit/pigeon.

I know I keep saying it but Archery, Shooting, all are tremendous fun, and it is little use denying thier value should things ever get so bad, but in case tSHTF is not a good enough reason for having any firearm etc, simularly to the store what you eat, eat what you store sound bite, some things are going to be little use in really bad times if you aren't well practiced at using them now, so find a club or a farmer who has too many rabbits and pigeons, or form a club if you have somewhere which can be used, chances are you'll meet some like minded people doing it too, don't just get something for fear of Zombie attack :tinfoil
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

Since everyone in this thread is contemplating "guns, air rifles and weapons" here's a cheap and concealable air rifle to make.

nice idea but the bb will just fall out, only one shot, wont kill a rat if you could hit it. more likely to further enrage an attacker than deter them. i'd laugh at someone using a co2 bb gun on me let alone that

old style bb buns can be very power full if you `up the gas ` .they also fire steel bb`s . ive seen some in the past that were classed as a section 1 fire arm

dont forget air rifles and air pistols are considered firearms, so making this could be manufacturing a firearm. this would be dependant on its fps but also shooting some one would be assult with a firearm. just a thought

Help, please...

I have just found a local shop selling CO2 4.5mm pistols. Now, I've never heard of these. They range from €90 - €220 but I can't get any advice from the shop keeper because ( ) I don't speak the local lingo.
My OH has given me the green light, as what I really want is something that is very powerful & accurate that I can use for paper target practice.

I am extremely proficient with firearms yet have no experience with CO2 or 4.5mm calibre.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
