that's the way most people find their BOL's, I know it was mine-that and local knowledge too.Devonian wrote:

Bug Out Locations
Re: Bug Out Locations
Adapt or Die, there is no middle ground.
Re: Bug Out Locations
I don't have a BOL although I do have friends with land in wales that is remote ''ish'' so assuming I could get there it may be a possibility, at least we could go there without imposing too much on the locals. However, my friends have no preperations and they haven't done anything with the land. They originally brought a cottage and later purchased the fields in front because '' they liked the view and didn't want anyone to spoil it''/ It's marginal land to be fair but when I suggested putting in a few crops he said that such a thing would be an ''eyesore'',however, come a big event they may very well have to be forced , gently of course.
I also have friends with land in Yorkshire that would be better people from a practical point of view although they are nearer to a large town so swings and roundabouts really.
Other than that for long term I'm probably stuffed in reality.

Re: Bug Out Locations
Our plans are just starting to start after ages of planning.
We have used my pension fund and some cash to buy land instead of stocks and shares... we now have 12 acres of Cornwall. I think we really wanted more woodland and less bare land, but you can't have everything you wish for. It's not very remote in Cornwall terms, but it'll do fine and I reckon alot of Cornwall folk will be pretty self sufficient so the dangers will be less than in many areas
we'll be planting perennial fruit, herbs, spices, trees that have a purpose, functional, fast growing or edible and plenty of spikey bushes, especially if they have fruit!
I've not got significant 'underground' plans, I'm more looking to be self suffient for when things go wrong, although certain things will be underground for various reasons and there will be a certain amount of earth moved to make it easy to defend, get around without being seen and look...well, uninteresting.
Anyway, as long as the world doesn't go wrong for 4 or 5 years...and the world doesn't get too violent, we'll be OK.
1st proper project is a borehole...

Re: Bug Out Locations
Adrian, do you have to seek any planning permission for your activities? I've been looking around a bit and it all seems a bit restrictive in terms of what you can do.

Sounds like an interesting project!
Good luck with that.
Re: Bug Out Locations
Sounds like a good plan. i understand the whole nature of the property is about privacy and looking uninteresting but some pictures of the progress would be interesting.
Dwellings- Any subterranean/earth sheltered dwelling requires planning permission and must comply with the current building regulations. The issue here is means of escape in case of a fire and size of windows.
Storage- No.1 gain planning permission for a Subterranean storage area, size pending can be easy for residential but difficult on green/brown land. No.2 which is a bit cheeky and requires the property to be residential, is under permitted developments and more specifically ancillary garden buildings.
Very restrictive and very hard to keep private if the official routes are followed.Cromicon wrote:Adrian, do you have to seek any planning permission for your activities? I've been looking around a bit and it all seems a bit restrictive in terms of what you can do.

Re: Bug Out Locations
Don't need all that much planning permission, as I have over 5 hectares there is a certain amount of permitted development that I should be able to work within.
Just need it to stop raining for 5 minutes...I mean, I don't mind a bit of rain, or a bit of wind, but this is a baptism of, well, wind and rain
I can't build underground easily, I expect I'll find bedrock pretty quick, but owing to the wind I think 'slightly sunken' everything will be helpful and reduce roof heights so it won't be high profile.
Energy and water and low level site security are first...
Site security - I have 1km of boundary, so I don't mean big fences and things, but I'll be toning down the neon lights saying "get your free food here".

Re: Bug Out Locations
Like the sound of Adrian's place - just a pity you're so far south . I'm not sure you'll get to eat the fruit though . Too many people will be roaming around foraging. I would make it look as abandoned as possible and hide accommodation in plain sight. I don't have any bug-out plans right now and actually scared thinking about it. I know for sure I won't be heading to a Government-run refugee camp. In my opinion, the Government will be the problem by that time. If necessary, we'll be running for the hills, if I can convince the rest of the family. Don't discount that you may be "hunted" with heat seeking equipment. Wonderful for the police to be able to catch the crims with it, but consider if it gets into the wrong hands, or the police are the problem too. Do I sound paranoid? Probably! Come to think of it, I may be booking us a one-way ticket to Latin America as soon as I see certain things happening. We will be putting up some new stuff in our garden this year as the old sheds and greenhouse are in a bad way with all the storms. Seriously thinking of digging underneath once they're up, Colditz style for hidey-hole. Only problem will be bedrock. Can't have too many options.
