Cheese

Prepacked will have a date (normally) several months hence. So the fridge is the ideal medium term storage facility. Anywhere cool will do tho.

Cheese freezes. The texture becomes more crumbly, but it's all about the flavour so who gives a ...........

Cheese stored in fridge/cool dry location will become mouldy and or dry out after time. Simply cut off the mouldy/dried pieces (use to bait mouse/rat traps) and consume the remainder. If it is just dried out, grate onto bread and grill. Scrummy! Use as a topping on mashed potato etc

Not tried blue cheese. Do wot? :o

We prefer it when it's waaaaay past the sell by date with crackers, a little homemade chutney and port

Oh my, know what I'm having for lunch now.....

If freezing cheese it's best to grate it as it will just crumble into bits if you try to cut it. I learnt the hard way, or should that be the crumbly way

Mould on cheese and jam are the only ones you can cut off/scoop out and eat the remainder safely, I think?!

Oooh blue cheese.... shudder, just the smell of them set my teeth off, how can you eat somethng that smells of rank feet.. uck!

Ordered my new fridge and can't be delivered till beginning of August... WHAT?! I have no fridge at all... nothing is staying edible in this heat. Not a happy prepper at the moment.

THANKS!!

Been without it for a while now, had to wait for money to arrive before I could order... It's not so bad when it's not this hot. I do remember that waaay back when, there used to be a pot that you put your milk under and it kept it cool for a good while, think it was made of clay or something like that.

Only buying what I need when I need it at the moment so not much lunch stuff to be found, cheese has gone rather rubbery and fruit is just going off at a rate of knotts, ham - don't even go there - slimy and not edible, salad goodies only good for a day or two so must be eaten quickly.

A good lesson though of what it would be like, and that's just without a fridge... good practice I think and we all know that we need to practice, practice, practice!! Will update with any new developments as and when they happen. ;)

Just metered mine out it pulls 3a running on my charger ( I got one yesterday as my cool box doesn't fit in my small car too well... Will upload pics shortly. Your charger needs to be dumb..is the old type with the dial gauge ... These modern smart chargers won't work

Decaff, evaporative cooling is the answer to help a little bit - you will need to pay out for terracotta flowerpots, probably, I believe they're the best because the water evaporates *through* them as well as *around* them, but at least you'd have them afterwards for container gardening.

There's loads of links, but thats a typical one ...

goodluck.

I'll try and keep this simple as i can :D

First check your battery charger can provide 4 or more amps (it will be on the casing / instruction book somewhere)

I can use either a smart charger ((as long as you have a spare 12v car battery / caravan battery handy)

or a normal old style charger

The old style charger is the easiest to use...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-HEAVY-DUT ... 4ac35a6f76

For safetys sake your much better using a 12v battery to cig socket adaptor ( i made my own from a cig lighter extension cable and 2 battery clips like this:
Image

and making sure the charger clips cant come into contact with each other... like they could if kicked in the pic below....

rather than doing what i did in this picture to get the reading for you...
Image

positive to the tip and negative to the side contacts...

this is the lead i made
Image

and how to couple up to a smart charger.......
Image[/img]

clip the charger to the battery terminals then attach the fridge to the same polarity terminals then switch on the charger

You can get dedicated power supplies from most camping shops if you'd rather go the proper way but i have run the camping fridges for a good while off a battery charger with no issues...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MINI-FRIDGE-C ... 2c7181f471

usual things make sure the area is well ventilated (especially when piggybacking off a battery) check the charger and any wiring isnt getting too hot

the cooler can cool 11 degrees below ambient temperature at 26^C according to the instructions...

and can fit a 4pint milk container
