Borax is easily bought cheaply on Ebay. But...I use Borax in my taxidermy, however, it has to be the real stuff, pre EU directive. The EU decided to take out the `harmful` parts from it so now you can buy Borax substitute, which still does your laundry fine and is good as a cleaning product but no longer has the ingredient in it which acts as a preservative, which is what I need it for. It also no longer kills ants (which it was good for).
I get round that by searching for sodium tetraborate, which is the chemical name of the original Borax, on Ebay and there are still sellers that stock it as it`s used in chemistry.
What Preps are you doing this week
Re: What Preps are you doing this week
This week? Mainly having much needed R n R, recharging my batteries (no, not duracell's, MINE!), went to a great gig, stood out in the pouring rain, hand rotavated the allotment, took delivery of 3 thornless blackberry plants and started a new sketchbook.... half term ahead so we're going to plant out everything from the greenhouse and fix up solar powered lighting on the allotment shed....

Been out in the garden - realised not enough to get us through the winter so planted more carrots, parsnips, leeks. Planted out a courgette. Plan to do cabbage and kale tomorrow. Hopefully now its warmer everything will speed up!
Have ordered some books off amazon, to do with self suffiency, preserving etc So will review when I've read them.
I am looking a push bikes tomorrow. For fitness and an alternative form of transport. Means I won't have to use the car so much over the summer and save on fuel.

Returned on Sunday from The Bushcraft Show in the Lake District, four days in the outdoors, well worth the money! The kids got a lot out of the four days and we will be going again in 2012. Now, we've got The Wilderness Gathering to look forward to, in August!
For you Preppers with kids, there is more for the kids to do at The Bushcraft Show, than The Wilderness Gathering. I've had experience with both events and thats my opinion! Except for that, both events are worth the money!
Bought a box of Maya sticks, 3 packets of Trioxanne bars, 2 Swiss gel stoves from The Bushcraft Show.
Bought another LED Lantern from Aldi. Bought 4 LED Glow Sticks from Homebargain, at a £1.00 each, got myself 2 red and 2 green. Got myself some more Para-cord from Poundland!
Still tendering my veg plots in the garden, already picking the peas, very nice! Everything else is growing well. I replanted last seasons strawberry plants, and they're producing fruit, I'll see if I can get another season out of them.

Relatively expensive - £50 for 24 including post which I didn't think was too bad £2 each - lets see what they are like when they arrive. They are supposed to be new.itsybitsy wrote:How much were the Mason jars?damar2000 wrote:

I wanted them now rather than shopping around as I have a tiny freezer and I like to cook in bulk so I'm going to have a go at canning beans in tomato sauce and some soups first off.
If you are interested I think he had more than 10 available in boxes of 12 so do an ebay search for Mason Ball preserving jars and you should find them.
Re: What Preps are you doing this week
Sorted the freezer out and disposed of some crap that was in there - such as cauliflower grills, ancient potato wedges, freezer burnt chicken and some rather questionable fish cakes - to make room for all the (British) meat and fish I'm about to stuff it with. Doin this now so that I have a full freezer of good grub for the winter when utility bills become eye-wateringly expensive but it's so cold that I have to have my heating on 24/7. Can't wait for that...
