Thanks for the responses about the ex-army gear. I can understand the used stuff - it's just the new stuff - feel they should use up stores and not have obsolete stock - if it was good 5 minutes before, it's good now.

This week, delighted to discover Hubby has been busy in the garage. He's cleared and cleaned a good section of it and PAINTED THE CONCRETE FLOOR. It doesn't take much to make me deliriously happy . Helped him with the shelving. Bit tricky to start with, but with his strength and my ability to work out the practical application of the instructions , we got the first section together (more clearing and floor painting before we can get the next section on. On the down side, one of the little brace tensioner doodahs just completely disappeared, so a call to Big Dug on Monday is required. We think it disappeared right into the corner post, but a magnet and string failed to get it out . We have metal roof supports in the way (we had to lower the top shelf) and have decided to put it against the back wall instead of the side wall, which means removing the slowly collapsing shelving bolted into the back wall (which may also be asbestos - the roof definitely is!!!!) and going through the clearing, cleaning and floor painting routine. We have a huge double garage which is brick fronted, asbestos? panels and pebble dash walls, asbestos roof and some wood cladding. I wasn't keen until I realised the walls and roof will probably last forever and it is quite solid. The only downside is that, like a shed, there are gaps and it's not double walled or insulated. I don't know if we could do anything about that in the future, but it's still a massive space for preps, etc. We have a double electric garage door, which has decided to stop working and I wondered if anyone knew who could fix it (West of Scotland)? Money no object, I would knock the whole thing down and build a massive extension on that footprint, together with the gravelled area and patio between the house and garage, build in a basement (if no rock in the way) and build it with an upstairs (we are in a bungalow). It would at least double our house and we'd still have the same size of garage. Prepping has turned out to be the catalyst to us getting everything sorted out and I'm looking back and thinking what a long way we've come since I caught the bug. Thanks guys.
What Preps are you doing this week
Re: What Preps are you doing this week
I've got two dehydrators on the go, one for jerky and one for sweetcorn (lovely smell in the kitchen, corn, steak and a leg of lamb in the oven). After lunch I'm going to fettle two paraffin Primus stoves I had off ebay last week.

Fiesty the first thing to do is check the switches are on at the distribution panel/ fuse panel, then check any fuses. if it is a blown fuse replace it, if it blows again a fault exist some where in the circuit. After the fuses blows or the circuit breaker keeps tripping out, call out an Electrician. Any competent electrician should be able to repair/replace for you.

Id be very careful with second hand masks, Since they are effectively a life saving device you dont want one with a leaky seal or rotten head harness which wont pull it tight to seal on your face...

it depends on the fault sometimes with electric doors it can be something simple not electrical perseyHamradioop wrote:Fiesty the first thing to do is check the switches are on at the distribution panel/ fuse panel, then check any fuses. if it is a blown fuse replace it, if it blows again a fault exist some where in the circuit. if the door wont move check the door frame for a infared anti trap beam and clear any cobwebs away from it and its opposite sensor or reflector, or a sticking limit switch which tells the system the door is up or down some motors also have a thermal overload reset button
if its remotely operated are the batterys ok it could have lost its code the owners book should show you how to get the receiver and remote talking to each other

Re: What Preps are you doing this week
well today, slightly hung over! I've modded one of two IPK's (individual protection kits, issued to British army cold war era, they're amazing! strong, IR reflective and quite light weight!) to reinforce the holes and stitch a few pound land foil blankets to the inside the idea being to reflect heat back down. These make up the basis of my INCH kit, I'm bugging in should the need arise but it would be foolish not to be ready!
I've created a few more 2l pop bottle planters for my recycled hydroponics test rig, before I splash out on the materials for the final design.
I've added extra padding to my dogs saddle bag to stop blisters, and bruises etc for him.
I've not done any physical training today and feel like I've put on 10 stone from last night booze and junk food binge lol but I'll be back in the woods foraging nettle seeds and dandelion roots with the dog.
I've made some more wound powder (cayanne, echinacea, comfrey, sea salt) for my FAK, and rotated some tinctures.
over all it's not been a bad day considering how rough I've felt!

My hubby checked the basics when it stopped working. I think we do need to get an electrician out, but I hope the motor hasn't gone. A garage door company will just try to sell us a new system even if it's fixable.Hamradioop wrote:Fiesty the first thing to do is check the switches are on at the distribution panel/ fuse panel, then check any fuses. if it is a blown fuse replace it, if it blows again a fault exist some where in the circuit. Re: What Preps are you doing this week
It does have remote controls, but we haven't used them for years. The garage also has a metal back door and there are hard wired switches for the garage door (and lighting) just inside there. Annoyingly, the electrical sockets are in another corner. All the other electrics are working fine and my biggest concern is that it's either the motor or a mechanical problem - I definitely wouldn't have a clue what to do there. Getting the garage cleared out is a big incentive to get all of this working. The huge double door can be opened easily enough from the outside, but I can't put it back down on my own - can't get it flush enough to shoot the additional security wall bolts home, so I'm stuck using the back door and climbing over stuff to get what I need. Will let you know how I get on.Yorkshire Andy wrote:it depends on the fault sometimes with electric doors it can be something simple not electrical perseyHamradioop wrote:Fiesty the first thing to do is check the switches are on at the distribution panel/ fuse panel, then check any fuses. if it is a blown fuse replace it, if it blows again a fault exist some where in the circuit. Got the chain on the bike changed up. It really makes a difference to the gear change to hear it being so silent with the gear changes. Now I just got to get the brakes sorted ( they work well but squeal!) before winter comes in and buy that stirrup pump and then I will be all set for safe bike use this winter.
