How about doing away with the letterbox and fitting a post box on the wall . Then there isn't access , however make sure the box is fitted somewhere fire proof so they can't use it as a fireholder and set the whole house on fire .

Thanks guys!

Sniper, I don't think a wooden block like that will be secure enough - I don't think its just about not putting anything inside, there could well be spaces at the edges where something could be squirted through (I know it sounds dramatic, but its a bad situation I'm looking at). Those letterbox blockers found by poppypiesdad look just the ticket - though I really hope the postbox can cost less than that. My sister bought one in France - its normal to have them in the countryside, saves the postie going down all those long lanes to one house! - and it cost a third of that  but it can't wait till the next trip to France.

Fitting the box somewhere fireproof ... thats a good point. If the house wall is of brick, is that good/safe enough to fix the box onto? The front wall is less than hip height, just an ordinary little garden wall, there isn't really another place. I totally get what you mean about the postbox potentially becoming a fireholder, thats certainly to be avoided! There's no garage, so nothing that can be done there.

Thanks again! Any other ideas, feel free.
