Simple is good. I ( most of the time) ride fixed gear. Simple to maintain, even though Ivam a very competent mechanic. As for tyres, Schwalbe Marathon Plus is the one. I have these on all 4 machines. They will cost in the region of 30 quid each, but they are tough! At about 100 mile a week they will last about 2 years. I have only had 4 punctures in 6 years of using them, and I do some miles. There is no such thing as NO punctures unless you use solid tyres- and the ride with them does not bear thinking about!

Jansman, thanks for the tip on the tyres. I just Googled the ones you specified, they look great. And yeah, solid tyres wouldn't be my choice either. I remember having those on little tricycles when I was a wee boy - felt every bump!
Incidentally, I have about a 16 mile bike ride to do today - beginning in a couple of hours. Gotta go from where I am on the Wirral to my Sisters in Ellesmere Port. Then the same in reverse tomorrow. Should be a good journey.

Hi Guys, New to the site, this Topic has got my interest though. I've got a rigid frame MTB 26"wheels. The best tyres are http://www.amazon.co.uk/Schwalbe-Speed- ... 14&sr=8-27
I use them on my bike, superb and cheaper too. I have fitted the bike with full front and rear panniers and you can carry loads on it.It is also fitted with a trailer hitch, that easily carries kit or kids.
I also have two spare wheels fitted with off road tyres.
I do own a car, but if things go downhill quick, you can forget getting petrol.Remember the threat of fuel strikes, all my local garages where empty within hours.Everyone in the family has a maintained bike.
