I saw where MH was coming from there Steveo, I believe we are talking about the assumption that we were deciding who to let into our little group, or who's group to join like the world is our oyster, in the scenario we are discussing we cannot be certain of how to "play" things and certainly cannot expect to be in control of them, we would be stuck wherever we are, negotiating and interacting with whoever is there or comes along.
