I'd love to see a video made of it Iron Maiden thundering the track out to a whole load of Bear Grylss wananbees trying to scurry away to the woods trying to look inconspicuous loaded down with allsorts of gear, they just don't get it, there is no open country like the states, here in the UK if your not already "out there" you'll be falling over one another trying to get there.
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

Plymtom and lonewolf are correct. Too much from USA is being taken on board over here.
There are many different events, however the two main ones, in my opinion, are financial collapse and pandemic.
Those with bug out kits (btw you’ll need Vaseline for chaffed lips and hands, night sights and a hotwater bottle) try bugging out for a week in a wood, now would be a good time, for a week. If you’ve done that, great. Now can you imagine three months?
Most woodland in the UK is not over run with deer and wild boar, perhaps a few badgers and a fox, within a month most would be wiped out, and future breeding would be compromised. You will end up living on fried earth worms and insects. (don’t go taking any form of firearm onto other peoples’ land without permission)
1/ you will not survive long in a wood
2/ you will not survive long on your own
3/ wherever you go, you will be seen – your compressed lpg won’t last that long.
If I was in a town, I’d have sorted out like minded folk, found and reccy’d an abandoned building such as pub or factory preferably with a canal or railway near by.
The absolute last things is to put yourself underground (unless you have three entrances two of which at least 30m away) or have any dealings with the authorities.

nice summing up Chainsawman, living in the woods even with the best will in the world and the best bushcraft skills isn't going to be a very long life, you need 4 walls and a roof around you, it isn't the cold that will kill as much as the wet and the damp, even Ray Mears wont last long in a shelter if he cant get dry and get his clothes dry, being wet all the time will soon get you down. somewhere enclosed out of the weather where you can have a fire is going to be needed, this is where a previously scouted BOL will save your life, running for the hills and doing a Rambo in the woods isn't going to cut it.

Would it not be a good idea to get accross the channel to mainland europe ?

By heading south it would surely make things much easier, warmer anyway.

France is a big country with far fewer people in it & with so many other countries to choose from after that.

This rock we live on would become uninhabitable quite quickly, if your planning to bug out then surely finding space is vital & you wont find it here with the 60 million others in the same predicament.

The problem with going to a different country is 1. you won't know the country, customs or cultures 2. you will be seen as an outsider and therefore at greater risk of attack 3. warmer environments can lead to the more rapid spread of infections and disease 4. you have to cross the channel which could (?) be potentially dangerous

Also the population of France is comparable to that of the UK (definitely not smaller!), but yes it is a bigger country so the population is more spread out.

It would however be interesting to know what Europeans living in the UK would do though, maybe a mass exodus back to their own homeland to be with their families??

Could be a case of the grass always being greener on the other side but I also can't help thinking that any event liable to make this country uninhabitable is also likely to have wider implications and affect mainland Europe too. If the situation is something like a pandemic then the French authorities may well try to protect their borders and prevent us crossing over there.
'Course I wouldn't totally rule it out as we should always have as many options as possible.

go to a foreign country and YOU become the foreigner, you will be the one that gets raided/looted first, better to stay here and make the best of it, at least we all known the customs and can speak the language, personally I wont leave my area but go deeper into the back country(its there if you know where to look) if it gets that bad.
