Been rethinking my EDC/BOB, my summer pack is far ligher now and my winter pack too, the riots have brought the idea home that as much as you think you can defend your own home, if someone petrol bombs it you are going to have to leave and all the preparations you have put in place there will go up in flames.
I also have plans to start putting out more caché. Other than that I picked up the following books:
Collins Complete Woodworker's Manual
Metalworker's Data Book (Workshop Practice)
Soldering and Brazing (Workshop Practice)
Hardening, Tempering and Heat Treatment (Workshop Practice)
Sheet Metal Work (Workshop Practice)
Art of Welding (Workshop Practice)
Drills, Taps and Dies (Workshop Practice)
Gears and Gear Cutting (Workshop Practice)
Lathework: A Complete Course (Workshop Practice)
Foundrywork for the Amateur (Workshop Practice)
Milling: A Complete Course (Workshop Practice)
Basic Benchwork (Workshop Practice)
I also picked up some weights and the P90X work out DVD's to get myself in top shape.

Can I recommend eye pads for first aid boxes - the type that come with a bandage attached - these are very useful for cuts, especially if you're out on your own. Saves trying to hold a dressing over a cut and then unroll and wrap a bandage without dislodging the dressing.

the last few weeks I've been working on long term storage dry goods stuff, so I have lots of legumes and starches and sugar and such ready for when the O2 absorbers arrive in a few days. Yesterday was our anniversary and the OH got my a dehydrator as a gift! *dances* so I'll be going mad on veg later at the supermarket

I always love presents like that. When I got my Leatherman multi tool as a pressie my hubby was so unsure about giving it. He thought it was the wrong sort of present!!! I have asked for a dehydrator for xmas - hubby said no but I will win him round to the idea!preservefreak wrote:the last few weeks I've been working on long term storage dry goods stuff, so I have lots of legumes and starches and sugar and such ready for when the O2 absorbers arrive in a few days. Here are 2 books that I was recommended by an American friend. I don't know what I'd do without them!preservefreak wrote:the last few weeks I've been working on long term storage dry goods stuff, so I have lots of legumes and starches and sugar and such ready for when the O2 absorbers arrive in a few days. My prep for the week - Treadmill
I went back to doing some martial arts a few weeks ago after a 10 year break and realised just how unfit I am. I spend plenty of time walking the dog or plodding round Dartmoor and can walk a few miles with a bag and not feel it so always thought I was still fairly fit....unfortunately not
As soon as the exersize is mixed with bursts of high intensity I am sweating like a pig and ready to colapse.....and thats just in the warm-up
It got me thinking that if I ever did need to bug out or travel on foot during a crisis, depending on the situation, the chances are that short bursts of high intensity might often be necessary to hide, escape, hunt etc ....and far from being fairly fit and able to cope as i thought, I now think I would be a physical wreck after a couple of days, bearing in mind I will also be carrying kit and may be operating in a stressfull environment.
Anyway, I've dusted off the motorised treadmill I got from ebay and started to do 1/2 hour session every morning involving running, (quick) walking, and jogging to try and simulate real life to an extent.... and i've never sweated so much in my life
Just thought I would mention it as the subject of "bugging out" came up in the recent Riots thread. You probably aren't half as fit as you think you are and over estimating your abilities like I did is probably fairly common, and probably also pretty dangerous

Re: What Preps are you doing this week
CC, can you put your treadmill on an incline? 3% is a good start as it helps to simulate running outside with wind resistance etc.
Also, for anyone running to lose weight, alternate between a jog for 2 minutes and a fast jog/sprint for a minute. Keeps your heart rate variable and torches those calories
