What the heck were they thinking?
...
AVOID!

On opening the tin, it was full enough of round garden pea sized peas. They looked a bit grey and had visible whitish 'pre-shoots' a bit like marrowfat peas. The water looked a bit grey too.

The peas tasted like dishwater and in a first for me, I chucked them.
Especially with the name "Simply Tinned" implying they pick fresh peas and pop them straight in a tin to preserve the freshness.
They were barely green. But then the mushy peas do contain colourings and these don't.
I just can't forgive the environmental damage and obscenity of rehydrating and canning them. Never known any other supermarket to pull that stunt.

'The man on the internet' says that peas should be blanched before dehydrating, to preserve their colour, but that that will remove skins. These peas still seemed to have their skins and little colour, so had they even been blanched? https://www.easy-food-dehydrating.com/d ... -peas.html

How in gods name had they rehydrated them and kept them sterile?

Oh hum. I'm decided. I'm going to buy a LOT of frozen peas and dehydrate my own for long term storage. Tinned peas are to be shunned from my stockpile

Just noticed this thread and had a quick skim through it.

This guy, Bald Foodie Guy, has a YouTube channel where he compares bargain basement food with pricier branded food. Quite entertaining and very well presented.

I eat a lot of Tomato Ketchup.... I've been told that it doesn't count as one of my five-a-day

Recently we've found it hard to find in our local Morrison's (we buy the own brand not Heinz or other expensive ones), so I dropped into a Sainsbugs that I pass on my delivery route
Own brand 970gr, £1, BBE 01/2024. Its thicker then the M's offering, not as brightly coloured and I like it better.... Result !

Handy, Thank you.

Maybe we can make an effort to link out to other such reviews rather than reinvent the wheel?

I just watched a few and he just persuades me all the more that value brands are for me.
The quantum leap from market leading named brand to value brand to jaw dropping with ratios like 4:1 or more.

We just need to avoid the real rubbish and find the most acceptable substitutes.... And add a pinch of salt.

Well, actually, the tricky bit is sneaking these past the food snob, tasting panel.

I keep seeing Heinz Ketchup in Home Bargain & others at £3.50 a bottle! I gasp and chunter every time. It was £2 for the same bottle in Summer 2020 and i recall begrudging that.
I keep hearing about the Sainsbury Hubbards and must try it, Currently using Batts Ketchup from Lidl

I keep trying to substitute the Weetabix, but MrJ can tell the difference from the shape!  Pick your battles!

I've not tried the Hubbards, the one I bought (a lot of) is the plain "by Sainsbury's"

I push my luck with the substitutions and the sneaking in of past BBE stuff (Like today's 2017 tins of soup). Like I say... I pick my battles.
He can even tell the difference between real weetabix from ASDA and real weetabix from poundstretcher, To be honest, sometimes, I can too.
It seems that the discount retailers get the slightly imperfect batches. We found that with McVities digestives. Not exactly B grade, but if they ever over cook a batch, they seem to divert those to the discounters. Or maybe those discounters are less careful of storage or stock rotation.

@Jenny i never knew that about the over cooked stuff and that but it makes me wonder sometimes when i see farmfood selling tins of mackeral that others are doing at £1 or more and they had it for £0.69p , but other stuff to i just get so mad and when people say about us bulk buying i just smile .

On a note off subject do any of you watch the funkyprepper on youtube , just started and some of his stuff makes sense some not so much but i think all us preppers will have to find a way to talk if the net went or ways to keep our net up , i am hoping andy chips in on how to run the net , i am going to grill my niece when she comes as she is a techno wizz , i am going to look at like some rural people have their own station or something lol but i am going to be taking my ham licence soon as well as having cb and other ways i hope some of you guys are on the ham and we coudl all stay in touch .

ok jenny keep sneaking it in , i think we are all in for tough times , i am going to start making a list of what we use , i will say i love the mash pots from the ukraine lol i know but they have gone from 4 for £1 to 49p each so not getting them now but handy for us when i am stuck in bed as we have kettle and all tea making stuff upstairs .
