What Preps are you doing this week? Part 10
Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 10
Think I might have to bin half a cauliflower. I hate chucking food. Had some of it last night and it had started to go a bit limp. I don't really want to risk getting ill. Should have used it up earlier. Had to chuck some pasta the other day, it was at it's best before date but had been open for months. I opened a new bag and put a plastic bag tightly over the top. Need to have pasta more often, and not buy cauliflowers until I need them.

Just got some smoke alarm batteries delivered. I think it's better to replace them early rather than one chirping in the middle of the night and you don't know which one it is. In fact one went off in my room the other day. I mean properly went off, not chirping. I don't know why, I wasn't creating dust or anything. Maybe some dust blew in through the window. I put a new battery in and it's been OK since.
I keep a list of when I've bought them and when I've replaced batteries.
I have an optical and an ionising in each room. They don't make the ionising ones any more, so I'll probably chuck them when they get old.
I think I'll take the batteries out of mine if I ever go away, as I lock my bedroom door and it would be a nightmare for the lodgers if one was going off.
I have a standard list of things to do when I go away, so I've added it to that.

Got any citric acid monohydrate? Soak the cauliflower in a medium strength mix of water and citric or white vinegar...Frnc wrote: ↑Sun May 28, 2023 8:15 am Think I might have to bin half a cauliflower. I hate chucking food. Copied from the short thread yesterday:
Two things for me are about working on food prices:
- Approved Food type shopping - I have a fair amount of slightly "expired" tins of food - I really need to eat those soon, they're not long term storage, and I've let them build up a bit.
- I have lots of edible planting - and I'm not good at picking and using it. It's still there for the long term, but it would help *now*. I really must do better.
Oh, and using the slow cooker more.
I've also ordered another foot long stick of growlights, a proper emergency hammer (made of steel, for the car I have yet to buy ) and a bike-lock type padlock for my big front gate. It's only waist height, so not at all impregnable but a padlock is still a good idea. I still haven't pushed the button on the fire extinguisher, the burns kit and the CO detector, there was too much fiddling around to do it (I'll post when I've done it!). Today might be good for that, I'm working at it
And I'm trying to walk more - going out earlier in the day, which means I eat lunch later, which means I have the chance to eat slightly less, and maybe lose a bit of the excess weight.

I've binned it anyway, but thanks, I'll bear that in mind in future. I did read that some limp veg can be made crisper by putting it in water, but I didn't want to chance it. My lodger reckoned it was best to bin it, too. I was planning on having pasta for 3 or 4 days soon anyway, so I'll start that tonight.Yorkshire Andy wrote: ↑Sun May 28, 2023 8:47 amGot any citric acid monohydrate? If just buy the burns dressings if you already have a first aid kit. Probably work out about the same price but you get more
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Astroplast-Bur ... 38&sr=8-12
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Reliance-Medic ... bXRm&psc=1
As for the co alarm get one that is to British standards -2 Is the important bit it's an updated standard over -1 which is intended for static use the sensors in -2 are a lot more robust
BS EN 50291-2

Just ordered some sun cream as it was half price, free delivery with Prime. You don't have to use the Fresh option.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00UHRZ4HA/
I use it on bike rides in the summer, walks etc. Any time I'm out in the sun for more than a few minutes.

You do realise you know an absolutely *scary* amount of what's proper to buy?Yorkshire Andy wrote: ↑Sun May 28, 2023 9:40 amIf just buy the burns dressings if you already have a first aid kit. Probably work out about the same price but you get more

Tomorrow I have 3 dozen ‘local’ roofing slates coming. They’ll cost me a pint in the village boozer. A lot of houses locally have slates a particular size, unavailable elsewhere. In the next village was a slate quarry where they were made a long time ago. It’ll help in the future if slates slip. Both of our son in laws are useful at that lark. More prepping for when I hang my fishing for the last time.
Picked up security lighting for certain points in the yard too. I much prefer approach lights. These are 10w LED so chuck sufficient light but use little electricity. Got them for a tenner apiece and there’s wiring all the way to the top,so it will be easy to install them. That’ll be this week’s ‘project’ .
I’ve taken more cuttings of the perennial cabbage. I’ll get them planted and forget. It saves so much work, and I should have had them years ago.
Along with the lights I have also bought replacement screws, brackets, general filler, sand, cement and suchlike. I keep everything in stock in case of repair emergencies. Sand and cement is so often needed!
Food wise we are on top of sufficient stock for the two of us. However, our dog and cats need stocking up for a little more. Most important. Same with my birds too.
Finally water. We keep emergency water in the pantry. Sorted. Outside we have the rain catchment which I use for watering the vegetables garden. It’s also extra emergency water,so as there is no rain currently,I keep it full via hose. And the well of course, which is constantly at the same level. That will do for now.

In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.
