This week its radios for me. Got 4 digital PMR446 portables and a PMR4476 only base station, just whats needed for helping out with youthwork/scouts, plan on lending spares out to adults. So wanted simple and licence free units that only take a few moments to explain how to use.

Find the digital PMR446 channels around me devoid of life so nice to have some free airspace, although never seen as secure by any means. Great for communicating without mobiles, especially if a little off the beaten track where some networks have poor coverage. :)
Hope for the best, prep for the worst and keep it need to know.

To be a consistent winner means preparing not just one day, one month or even one year - but for a lifetime.

This week for me, its going to be research into home security - cctv etc.

It became apparent earlier in the week that our property has a massive blind spot that needs rectifying.

I don't need/want anything super fancy, just something that enables me to see and record our main access.

Postman just delivered a couple of sawyer mini water filters, these will mainly be used when were out walking but should be handy for other situations too. Amazon currently have them for £17 instead of £30 so decided it was time to purchase them.
Garden produce is a bit hit or miss but managed to dehydrate some onions and kale this weekend which I'm happy about.

I have a question which I hope you lot can help me and mine with.
I just happen to have a load of old tobacco tins and I am making the cardboard wicked cookers out of them for the members of my family.
My son seems to think melting candle wax into the cardboard is fine but I am thinking that soaking the cardboard in fire gel would be best.

OK, your thoughts on the best fuel for the tobacco & cardboard cooker would be gladly received, as well as any other considerations.

Cheers,

I can think of pros and cons to both. The candle wax jobbies are good for longer burning, can be snuffed out and as the wax is a solid, it won't leak. It doesn't get as hot though. On the other hand, the gel is hotter burning, but would burn out quicker and is more difficult to snuff out and may leak. I have made a few tealight cookers in a Tobacco tin and discovered 5 tealight wicks will boil a cup of water in about 5 mins, if that's any help. :)

Keep an eye for these coming back in stock

Think I paid the seller £65 ish a few years ago (silly high price probably because out of stock)

Can read car number plates clear enough with them and fully adjustable focus and zoom

I dislike cameras with built in illumination as if you get dirt on the lenses the illumination causes glare

Fire gel is that gelled alcohol stuff right ?
Why not just use it as is ?

I have made and used wax-burners, they're rather sooty and smelly if your scrap wax is from scented candles. Upsides are they're cheap (read 'Free'), zero moving parts so nothing to break and theres nothing to spill as its just a lump of wax
BTW I've dunked them in a bucket of water and they'll relight after a bit of shaking.
