It's a jacket with a ton of hidden pockets, designed to let geeks like me carry a shed load of stuff but without it looking bulky or anything.

Perfect! :)
I tend to fill jackets quite well without stuffing extra stuff into them.
The beauty of these is that they're designed to look normal, as in, they are supposed to distribute the weight of all your crap. The bloke who invented it has done videos demonstrating the amount that it can carry and it's quite impressive.

At the moment I'm still carrying a bag with me most places, to put my first and second EDC (loose term) pouches. I'm hoping that with this jacket will negate the need for me to carry a bag for most of the year. Of course, in the peak of summer and the peak of winter it may not be good, but that's probably when I'd want to be carrying a bag for a few extras anyway, like sun cream or a waterproof jacket and fleece.
If it works for you then that's all that matters. If I'm close to home and its warm I'm often out in just a T shirt, if I need a jacket its usually a fleece or a waterproof, I'd end up carrying the coat more often than not, while I don't have one, a 'man bag' would probably be of more use to me but vanity prevents me from it as I sashay around, I'm far to 'old school' for a man bag.

Same here, I look at the man bags and think "that would actually be quite useful", then i think "no way can you pull that off. Want a man bag? Get a rucksack".

Closest thing to a man bag I have http://www.amazon.co.uk/Shoulder-Bag-Ru ... 00FGXE83QQ

But since the 5p carrier bag came in I usually take my larger rucksack
If your roughing it, Your doing it wrong ;)

Lack of planning on your part doesn't make it an emergency on mine

I quite like a messenger bag, Osprey have a few very well made ones but their not great at distributing the weight.

There's a lot to say for messenger bags, I use one most days, it's a 5.11 one I got for a bargain from eBay.

I bought this Quicksilver messenger bag from Argos a few months ago. Paid £15 for it but I'm not happy. I've never seen a bag that takes up so much space and yet holds so little.

I was hoping that I would be able to fit my packable backpack inside along with a folder and various paperwork and stationary. And a laptop and/or tablet on occasion. But in fact it's no good at all. For the effort that it takes to carry it around I've ended up leaving it at home and just bringing the backpack.

I'm in the market for another messenger bag, something low profile and smart looking, something not out of place in work or uni, and with lots and lots of pockets, big and small. Any ideas? I was looking at SwissGear and Wenger, but they all seem a bit too laptop-bagesq.

Kipling do a fabulous messenger bag, you can get in plain black or brown as well as girlie prints, the monkey keyring can be removed lol. They are light, strong and washable. Worth every penny they cost.
Behind every great man is an even greater woman. She carried you, raised you and made you who you are.

The G-Shock is tough solar and radio controlled and love it, the knife is a Belgium Army Knife 1954 made by us Brits for them brand new, just been stored for years cost £5.99 again love it , but do rotate watches and knives now and again..

I don't use the torch much but it appears to hold a charge for ages before needing a recharge ( there is a thread on it on here somewhere) http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00Q ... =8-2-fkmr2

Army can opener next to the pry bar thingy and Gerber Dime and pill holder , paracord just because...

I paid quite a bit for the clips from the states, as the cheaper ones off fleabay tended to come open easily.........

Oh and I have a swisscard in my jacket..........http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000 ... =8-1-fkmr2
