What Preps are you doing this week? Part 9
Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 9
It’s very true. Work is relative, and if you REALLY like your work, then fair play to you. I am now planning to semi retire in the next 18 months , hopefully. Mind you, the way things are economically, I have an open mind. But that is my plan. Aside from a couple of years with HM Royal Marines, I have been a butcher for forty or so years. My plan is to get a part time job doing what I like the sound of. On my terms. The rest of my time will be at home, looking after my animals, garden and maintenance. Time to fish and shoot when I want to, not when I can. Just the conversation about this has lifted my heart.WomanOfTheWoods wrote: ↑Thu Jul 07, 2022 10:39 am It all depends on what one means by "work" Jansman.
For me, work is a beautiful creative process which just so happens to pay well. And in times of uncertainty it makes sense for me to work more and earn more. For many people work is a grind. Something they feel they haveto do to keep a roof over their head and support their family. It is often 5 days of misery for 2 days of false freedom. My work is not a grind! It's working for myself, in my studio, surrounded by nature and using the natural materials that grow on my land. I produce art and design for organisations worldwide including heritage organisations.
It has been over quarter of a century since I chose to leave the world of "security" and became a free woman. I live simply and debt free. But that happened because I stepped way outside the comfort zone of most people.
One thing for sure though, hard , physical graft is something I am going to avoid in the future. I’ve done a lifetime of it.
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

No problem. If you were keeping documents in one you'd be best keeping the rubber seal because then it would be reasonably waterproof. The reason for removing it if you're storing lipo batteries is to avoid buildup of pressure in case of a fire insude the box.

Well not me but my dad... Think he's got the prepping bug having lived through the 3 day week and used to work in the electrical generating field on power stations....
Popped into his spare room today to get something and stumbled across his stash
The tupaware is full of batteries

Seeing as though prices are soaring, I did an up to date inventory of my supplies.
Whoops. 6 cans of corned beef dated 2016.
But, somehow, I've still got a good supply with no panic buying called for.
Except for candles. I thought it was a good idea to keep them in the attic.
It wasn't, and the tallow (yes you can still buy them) had melted into one super sized block with 12 wicks.
So they've been replaced.
Outside, the main gate has been replaced to a 6 foot metal one as someone has been raiding my green house. As a result, new tomato plants and seed spuds are in place.
Luckily the thief doesn't like garlic so that plot is untouched.
He/she doesn't like cabbage either.
Equipment wise, somehow my toolbox got wet in my mini man cave and my primus stove is a mess.
I've silver soldered the oil container and am looking out for a new 'roarer' head.
Anyone know where I can get primus spares??

This week,I am harvesting beans, salads, greens ,spuds,so plenty to do there. I have to do some repairs to the fowl pen,and give it a lick of preservative too. I have rechargeable batteries to solar charge ,and have to reorganise the pantry in the house to accommodate a bulk purchase of cat an dog food.
I am not working for a couple of weeks,so I have no excuse to NOT sweep the chimneys! I keep putting the job off,but I always feel ready for Winter when I have done it. Then of course, there is the ever present stream of firewood to process and stack.
Another cup of tea first though…

Today up on the North hill overlooking the sea it's a beautiful very sunny 16 degrees. And my family inland near Dufftown are basking at 22 degrees.
We are having a Northern Heat Wave A rare event and a grand reason to down tools.
Now all you folks in the South will be laughing at us weaklings up here who can't handle the heat. But today is just too hot to prep.
My To Do list is getting longer and longer, but it will have to wait until another day.
I managed to get a Solway plastic hen house very cheap, So when it get's a bit cooler I may just have enough energy to power hose and disinfect it.

I am lying under the trees halfway up the garden in Mrs J’s sun lounger, reading a book and snoozing. Lovely. If I can get Eric The Cat off my chest, I might even summon the energy to get a glass of wine. It’s a long way down to the house though…

Met Office is currently showing 24 degrees in my town I'm hiding indoors.
Not laughing at people being subjected to the Northern heatwave - I may live in the south, but I'm from the north
Jansman, can you hand Eric The Cat over to me for a little cuddle? I promise to give him back
