Been thinking about fuel for the rocket stove, which is my No 3 cooking option. So as I start to prune all the overgrown shrubs around me, I'm keeping the long thin branches. I wasn't sure how to store them, and at first I'm just stacking them in a huge flowerpot I've got (two feet across type huge), that'll do to start with.

Winter stocking up is going well - I'll still need some regular shopping for frozen veg, but if I absolutely had to, I could last 6 months on what I've got in the house! Quite surprised with myself.

Am carrying on with the pruning and preparing the garden for more useful plants next year, but the decluttering is taking a back seat, and I'm going to be focussing on financial preps for a while. Plus working out how quickly I can leave the house and get to a train station, family member has some health problems that mean an urgent "evacuation" by me is essential :( I'm looking at my "15 minute bug out plan" that I wrote after I read theplacewithnoname.com about Katrina, and adapting that.

Jars of various sizes have arrived along with extra lids, canner is currently being processed with Heathrow customs (please let it through) so hoping it will be here early next week! 8-)

Mr D seems to be on board with this project as he's asked me if I could do some mushy peas for him

I'm waiting for some red head torches to come, I've been using red tape on my existing head torch, but it's a PITA then when you want to swith to white light for something important. The crunch came when my mate fell off some rocks a few days ago in the dark, I was having to hold a torch in one hand and check him out with the other. (the red tape is murder to get off, very very sticky and tears, you cant get it off quickly)

after reading the article in general chat about life in Ukraine and scaring myself with nightmares, must avoid this website before bed, I went shopping today and upped my stores by a few of dozen tins and packets of assorted food stuffs and my med/first aid box. Plan to do this again next week and add candles (already have a LOT - but any excuse) and matches & lighters/lighter fuel, batteries. Also went through my stores and updated my notebook with lists and dates of stuff.

also got another fuel can for petrol, tesco had them for £2 today.

I had a safety-conscious brainwave last week and fitted a centrifugal clutch to the drive shaft of my screw-type log splitter. If you use one of these then you'll know they are not exactly Health & Safety approved but now at least I am a bit safer, I can cut the revs, stop the screw and hopefully retain some or all of my fingers. It still goes through tree trunks like butter so it's a win-win. Woo! It's like Christmas has come early.

They look similar to the ones I bought, except mine were cheaper off ebay, they work fine too.

Ordered my 10 Kg Urid Dal (being about 40 waffle sessions) and that will be a useful addition to food in general over the autumn.
