Hi,
I dont know if there are any communitys of preppers in cornwall, but I would like to start thinking about setting one up. I have most things from personal defence, food and water, but however, there are skills that in a long term apocalyptic happerning I would need, or have others in knowledge of the skills, I.e. healing, farming etc. So a sort of recruitment is what im thinking of.
I dont know how to go about this, but the first thing I think I would need is a location. I was thinking of buying forest land, and building within?
Whats everyone's thinking?
prepping dosent have to be lonely, and I think community is important.
Thanks,
Cross
A cornish community?
Re: A cornish community?
Buying forest land then getting planning permissions alone is a massive task especially in over developed areas like the SW, but I doubt if it is insurmountable providing you have enough investors with at least (at a guess) £300,000 each to put into the pot for buying land, obtaining planning, paying lawyers, buying and building the homes needed for each family.#
Then finding the essential skills is going to be a task in its own right plus the necessary equipment, machinery, tools etc for those folks such as tractors, ploughs etc.
Then of course the good old issue of who is going to be in charge? An individual or a committee the former instantly sees personality clashes the second as soon as you mention cooperatives or collectives has people wondering how secure their financial investment will be, and what if the committee moves the community in a direction the investor does not like ( perhaps they turn weird or go religious, or similar)
There are well developed plans afoot to build from scratch a complete new eco village in Weardale Co Durham and they have multiple investors and support from the local council, community and businesses, you would probably need something similar in Cornwall I guess.
Either way good luck with your venture.

I dont mean live together type of community, more like a network. Where a few I have met/trust we could all trade between ourselfs.
Im a skilled hunter, and wohld trade my game for what I need. Also I can make ammo out of scrap led (2.2 air rifle) so as long as I can make pellets, I shouldent run out of potential food. I can also teach the skills I have as a trade, and I keep plenty of over the counter drugs I could trade.
as for planning permission, I dont plan to let anyone outside my circle know of my plans, and certainly no government run facilities. I shall build in secret, letting no one know of location, therefore both avoiding those costs, and keeping my little sanctuary to myself. Did you ever hear about the man who built a castle under a massive pile of hay. No one knew what he was doing antill he had finnished

Re: A cornish community?
Can you expand a little more on what you are preparing for? From your post I'm assuming you want to bug out now and start afresh with a group of like-minded people.
My first thought is that you probably already have neighbours or friends living nearby, therefore this would be the core of a community around you that's in place, why do you want/need a completely new one? I may be missing the point so please expand, I'm sure some of the smallholders, forestry-owners and self-sufficiency members on here will chip in if they know more about your reasoning and plans.

Re: A cornish community?
To put it blunt, the community arround, bar from a few, are the 9eople that I would have suspected to be the looters, the ones who would only care for themselves, and the people who dont do anything for the local community at the moment, and I dont feel they would be any use is the situation. I personly feel a soler emp, but I prep for everything tbh
Re: A cornish community?
I agree with Briggs, I know there are a few in Cornwall on here, but you have to think on foot, I could get anywhere in Cornwall by car from here in around two hours max on a good day, yet in dire situations I doubt I could get to the river on foot let alone cross it. The same goes for groups, take away transport and .
the world grows.
Devon is similar, there are people who would probably happily team up on here, but we need to be in the same street or village, or prepared to do the commune thing I'm a social creature.. but not that social or able to drop everything and move.

I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

Preppergb, Weardale is just down the road from me, and i mean just down the road, do you know anymore about this eco village etc??? The idea of a self sufficient community is great, but as it has been said, everyone has there own ideas, beliefs etc & for people to invest possibly their life savings in it is a big ask, please keep us all informed of any progress you make, it would be a very interesting thread.

Welcome to this community crossbow. Have a look around, and see how you get on. Your posted topic is one that many of the old hands here have seen before. I am not knocking your aims, but try being part of our community first. There is a lot of knowledge and experience to be gleaned.
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

Re: A cornish community?
If I understand correctly Weardale Council, plus the EU and a development quango plus some local businesses have been trying to get the old La Farge Cement works at EastGate converted into a total off gid eco community with homes and businesses, they have found geothermal hot water underneath the site and part of the proposal was to build a tilapia farm as one of the businesses. Last I heard the project has stalled.
