A year's worth of food

Post by itsybitsy »

'Good practice' seems to advocate that it's prudent to have 12 months worth of food/household items stored. Does anyone actually have this, or close to it?

How much do you have - or estimate to have?

I would love too, but lack the space at the moment. Also the floor in the store room isn't designed to store that sort of weight   Also would need about £2000 - £3000 to set up.

I'm with TG on this, we would love to have 12 months worth of stores. But we would have to have to sell the boy to pirates to one fund the purchase and two we would need his room to store it in.

Nowhere near for me either, I have about 6 weeks of tins/packets etc plus a 20kg sack of Rice which should extend it a fair bit further. I'm gradually building it up but storage space and finance are the limiting factors so it is a slow process. On the positive side for me there are only 2 people to feed, it would be a lot harder if there were kids to feed as well

I could last for 2-3 months I think. Lucky that there's only the two of us here as well - but my main prob (aside from money  ) is that we don't eat out of pkts or tins. So I store mainly dry goods just now and am trying to grow more veg for soups and stews. I could do with some tins of meat though.

I could probably stretch 2-3 months aswell although I need more stored water. I have 4 mouths to feed so space is a major issue. The OH is fully onboard with the need to prep for TEOTWAWKI, as long as she doesn't have to see it which means everything has to be stashed out of site.

I have a mix of dry goods and tins/jars/packets but tinned meat is so expensive. I do have about a dozen tins of corned beef, ham, hotdogs and meatballs though.

It's a difficult one, the biggest problem with doing it all with tins is that you would need a minimum of 1000 tins / person / year  , thats why I started to add bags of Rice, a lot less space and money required. Also hope to buy a similar amount of Wheat to store, but it will be a long time before i ever have 12 months in stock

I could do around 2-3 months at the moment, probably more if I was happy to eat some 'interesting' concoctions, except for breakfasts which I am having a few problems sorting out. I do have some breakfast bars, porridge oats and slimfast shake mixes but I'd soon get fed up with that - I'm more a savoury than a sweet tooth. I guess I could make my own bread and have beans/spaghetti on toast too for brekkie too.

I did a quick 'sweep' of the cupboards last night. I've got 31 tins of tuna, 35 tins of beans and around the same of soup, 26 jars of various sauces, plus numerous tins of sweetcorn, other veg, cartons of tomatoes, dried beans, etc etc. I do have enough pasta/rice for about six months but it's not much fun eating it on it's own!

That will increase once I've got my little vegetable pots up and running - assuming that I get a crop, of course!

My main problem is space; I need to get some shelves sorted out for my understairs cupboard then I'm going to store stuff in there. I don't really want to start storing stuff behind the kick boards in the kitchen. That just seems a bit 'crazy lady behaviour' to me, and I'm not comfortable with it!!!

You could put stuff under beds itsy, I have to say though that im getting quite excited at the prospect of putting a shelving system up in the spare bedroom. OH has agreed I can have the whole room for preps

No no no! I can't do that as my beds are those metal bedsteads so you would see boxes and stuff - and I don't do untidy, it would drive me round the twist.

Good news on the bedroom though - if you've got it all contained then you can just shut the door and nobody can see it.
