Well, I'm looking at building a 72hour B.O.B. I'm wondering what items are a must in a bug out bag of the size. I will be looking into purchasing water purification tablets and also am thinking maybe of getting a small kelly kettle.
What would you guys that's have got bug out bags of that size recommend to be a "must have" item?.

coffee filters to strain water through before treatment. Pros lightweight and pack small, cons single use probably.
Millbank bag if you can find one.

Kelly kettles are quite bulky, even the small ones.
You'd do better with a vessel (canteen cup, billy, pot or WHY) and a twig-burner of some form that you could also use as a pot-stand with hexi/esbit tabs or an alky burner.
The Swedish military trangia "Filth Pot" (the black steel thing) is designed to hold an alky stove but can also be used as a twig-burner.
Some people modify hexistoves so they are also woodburners.
Sometimes there won't be (suitable) burnables available
The stove kit that I once used in a Build-a-BoB competition used four (later five) different fuels (wood, alcohol, hexi, wax and petrol).
Water bladder (as well as ready-use water in bottles or canteens)
Rain proof layer: Poncho or a suit of slicks
Food : High calorie, long shelflife, low weight or bulk, some ready to eat......Don't forget hot drinks.
Something warm to sleep in (blanket, poncho liner, sleeping bag or WHY)
Cash: Couple of decent sized notes are good, but a load of change is always useful (I EDC £5 worth of 20 p's and two quid in 10 p's

Copies of vital documents - passports, birth certs, insurance policies, house deeds or tenancy agreement, photo inventory of high-value items, CV, external hard-drive with full computer back-up.
You'll need to rebuild your life and this will help.

The most probable reason for BO is your home becoming un-inhabitable due to fire, flood or WHY.
You'll need kit to make living in your Evac site (hotel, mate's sofa, local school hall, Superdome or wherever) easier, and also for re-booting your life Post Event.

Please don't think this is a mickey take but I always include a whole roll of toilet paper unrolled and then folded into a plastic sealed storage box.
If such a problem happens that facilitates the need for porta-loos then believe me they do run out of toilet paper real quick.
If bugging out in non-urban area the need for toilet paper is obvious as well as a fire lighting medium.

I have to agree TP was one of our first bulk preps, largely because the supply of the brand we like and use at a few points became unreliable.Wulfshead wrote:Please don't think this is a mickey take but I always include a whole roll of toilet paper unrolled and then folded into a plastic sealed storage box.

I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

Re: Needed items in a B.O.B
I'd agree that a kelly kettle is a little bulky for a 72hr bag, I recently did a 72hr bug out experiment and found a hexi-burner, an extra pack of hexamine blocks, two disposeable lighters and a cheapshit knife/fork/spoon set wrapped in a rag fitted nicely inside a pair of mess tins. Therefore taking up no more room than the mess tins.
An item I'd say is a must have is tampons (non-applicator type). They are small, super-light, individually sealed against water and when unpackaged and unfurled are a bloody great bit of cotton wool which can be ignited with a spark, worked a treat for me even camping in mid november with nothing but damp wood around.
That's my two-penneth-worth anyways.
Sam.
