What's everybody planting this year ?

Post by diamond lil »

I've done some onions, some tatties, some chard and some kale. Want to do turnips and more tatties later, and really want to try leeks this year. What are you doing ?

Lil, I've just picked myself up off the floor - you've planted kale :!: :D

we are planting:
spuds, carrots (lots of carrots, we like carrots!), parsnips, swede, sweetcorn, french beans, runner beans, peas, might do a squash/pumpkin but take up a lot of space, beetroot, cabbage, kale, lots of salad items - lettuce, toms, cucumber, spring onions, radish, and I'm sure there will be more as I get started!!!!! :)

I've got some lettuce and tomatoes but inside. I planted kale last year too, boiled the horrible stuff and used it in stock for soup. Was impressed at how indestructible it was even through deep snow and extreme cold. This year I can feed it to the hens. Poor wee sods.
I cant grow carrots, neither can any of the neighbours, I dono why. I want to do leeks but unsure as to best way. Put in a load of turnip seeds but don't expect a lot to come through really. Turnip is handy & we like it.

We are growing Broad Beans, Sprouts, Swede, Spuds, Peas, Carrots, Cabbage, and Beetroot. On the Fruit side of things we have 2 different Strawberries, Red Currants, and Black Currants. With the Apple Tree we planted last year we have been told to pick the flowers this year to prevent it fruiting to concentrate on root growth.

I've got new tatties in (how long do they take to come through pls?), basil, tomatoes, peppers, spring onions and rocket. Haven't got any further than that as I've run out of pots, again. When I do I'm going to get some chillies in too.

Oh - and a blackcurrant bush - still need to get another for it to mate with!!!

Not sure what else to have a bash with right now. I eat mainly salads and stuff during summer so I don't want to be putting 'heavy' veg in yet.

When I get some new pots I'm going to put some beetroot in - I love beetroot! Can you grow cucumber in pots? :?

I always grow our cucumbers in pots but they need something to hang onto and climb, like a piece of trellis. We usually plant 3 and have enough cucumbers for 1 a day throughout the summer and a few to give away!

well, not really. First year I had some baby leeks sent from a grower somewhere and they grew really well, slow but nice and thick.
Last year I thought I would try from seed but ended up with thin leeks. Someone told me you need to mound them up like spuds so that may be where I went wrong. I might have another go this year but start them off in the greenhouse in seed pots then plant out.

Ok ta, I might try that, can also get some from a man in the next village who has a big polytunnel and sells plants for the church funds. That way I'm bound to get some at least.
