Getting organised

Post by mikefranks »

Hi everyone

I need some pointers to keep organised. I have had to start again from scratch and want to be super organised and when needed I can accesss my gear. I will be over the next few months building up basic supplies and equipment. What would be best to store. I was thinking to have a dedicated room with everything in it from food and water supplies to equiptment for preparing food and heating it without the usual microwave or cooker.

Garage style storage shelves have been an idea with storage boxes. The boltless tap in shelves are already in a room however thinking of storage containers with lids and labels on the end with contents. Can anyone suggest decent size and prices boxes with lids?

My main reason to prep now is weather and being isolated and not being able to leave. Bugging in and being able to board up windows and doors if needed. Sand bags water proofing some areas of my house is the plan.

Good luck with it all mate. I don't know your situation but to have a whole room dedicated to preps might draw attention if you have family or friends who stay over or who might see your stash for what it is. It will depend on how much you want to hoard but while its less handy, stashing stuff a bit more 'out the way' might work although a bit more unwieldy to run. Storage boxes that are tallied give you a bit of flexibility, especially with moving them as and when required. I'm getting into the time of year when my annual boiler service means I have to migrate a load of my stores.

I hope you find a solution that works for you mate.

I'm much the same as Deeps I have a room for everything, shelves floor to ceiling all the way round.

up to you really what you stock, make sure you like it though nothing worse than having to eat stuff you dont like.

As far as storage boxes are concerned, I use 24 litre lidded ones from Wilko (they deliver to my area, don't know about everywhere). They're useful because they just about go under beds, but they don't take up as much floor area as the "under bed" boxes.

Mike: I'm reading your post as suggesting that your gaff may flood (or at least that Flooding is at or near the top of your Risk List), also that extreme weather is again high on your List.

Is the prep room above the ground floor?
How likely is it to be breached in an extreme weather event (such as a storm or ex-hurricane) ?
Does the room have a window and/or ventilation? Whichever it is, can you seal these should you need to?
Is the floor up to supporting the weight ?

For your new place:
Are there any trees under your control that could fall or drop limbs and cause a breach ?
Also are there any trees belonging to someone else that may fall?
What are the neighbours like, are they assets or obstacles ?

Hi,

The room I have in mind is on the first floor. I have 3 bedrooms one of which is going to be the store room. There are trees on the neighbours drive way and along the side of my house. I have a few in the garden however they are not an issue. I like the trees as the provide a natural fence which is higher then a 6ft fence panel.

Not sure about the neighbours just yet. Time will tell as it’s a new place.
Flooding is an issue I am prepping for hence why I have everything that I need upstairs.

As well as flooding, just your normal storm weather when you can’t get out and end up bugging in. Better to be prepared then be I a situation where you are relying on others.

Thanks a lot Arzosah. Will check some out.

One room sounds good to go to. Knowing when there is an issue I can head to the “store room” and know where everything was.

Previously when I prepped things were dotted around and when needed I couldn’t find. I’m leaning from those mistakes and wanting to be organised and prepped

Good luck, while I have most of my stuff in the garage, I've got some gear in a spare room. Unfortunately neither is very well organised.
