im curious to know what other peoles plans are for if the "shtf"in this country?
The thing is, although there is alot of countryside in britain, in terms of population per squre mile, with every citizen spaced out evenly accross the land, there is still around 255 people per square mile in the uk, therefore you would never be clearly away from potential danger.
Compare this with the likes of canada that has an average of about 3 people per square mile, i think it could pose a serious problem.
"Bugging in" is obviously an alterative choice, but other than waste disposal issues and potential house raids to find food etc etc etc, is this only really a temperary solution?
Wouldnt it be great to have the land and natural food available (in terms of meat especially) that canada does.

Re: Run to the hills?
Population density of Scotland is 65 per sq km... We are half the size of England in area but have only a tenth of the people (5 million). We have plenty of room... but can you take our weather ?
Re: Run to the hills?
Any large scale shtf where food is a massive issue, would also mean a big die off within the country. Suicide, people not having treatment for existing conditions, waterborne diseases, lack of heating and adverse weather conditions, along with murders over food and other things would mean its little more then a waiting game. Give it 6 to 8 months and I'd think we would drop at least 30% of the population, a few winters and we would lose even more.
My plan is to wait 6 months in a well defended and equipped home dealing aggressively with anyone that crosses the line or invades my personal space. I would then slowly aventure out to scout my local area for the next three months, and find a more permeant location to develop needed resources and build relationships with people that I can work with.
(People from up north would move into Scotland if resources where low, your borders are not protected in anyway)

Re: Run to the hills?
Best option for me and probably most people (depending where you live obviously) is bugging in. The majority of my kit is in the house and i know the area and people. Second option if the first was unsafe would be to bug out in the campervan, its got 12v electrics, gas cooker, fire, fridge, plenty of food and water etc. I have a few secluded spots earmarked but it is reliant on roads being clear. Last option would be to disapear on foot into the estuary nature reserve with a BOB, not ideal but plenty of room to hide in and food to catch.
Will be staying at home if at all possible.
The SW, isn't as heavily populated as most of southern england but i expect there would be an influx at some point if things went belly up. One bonus Scotland has to the prepper who lives there is I think the first winter spent outside in scotland if you aren't used to the conditions will probably be your last

Very true CC ! You couldnt survive outdoors here in winter. Nobody could.
Re: Run to the hills?
thinking about the shortage of food others thinks to consider is to try and keep some small animals such as chickens as i think all live food sourses may become non exsistant or very hard to find. I think meat animals that are kept in farms or garden will disapere within a few seasons as people get desperate. I also think it would be hard to keep hold of any large animals eg pigs because to feed them and keep them out of sight would be hard with the amount of people per mile.

Bugging in. Evacuating to BOL as a fall back. Run to the hills is definitely a last resort.
Re: Run to the hills?
To bug in or to bug out: this has been, for me, the most difficult of all the decisions to be made.
And the answer I came to was that there can be no definite answer. I would have to remain open and flexible according to the situation and how things develop at the time.
If the SHTF I initially hope to bug in, drawing other family members to our home. That is where all my food an resources are after all. We should be able to protect and defend ourselves from minor intrusions fairly well.
Could we defend ourselves from a full scale determined group who decided to ram raid or fire bomb the house? No! So it is essential to have a Plan B (and C.) and an alternative bug out location. The BOL has, above everything else, to be remote and defendable. (Not an easy thing to find in such a small over populated country.) In order to achieve a safe location we would have to compromise on comfort. It took me a lot of time and searching to find anywhere that fits the bill.
Of course, having found such a place doesn't end the difficult decisions, it just poses several more: At what point would I abandon the relative comfort of home to head for my BOL? What route would I take? What if we arrive there to find someone else has already beaten us to it? Oh dear, more things to consider and more decisions to make!! The answer is to stay flexible, always have an alternative, back up plan.

Re: Run to the hills?
I too am undecided and think I would have to see what the situation was.
My house has a veg garden set up and the rear of property is only accessable via the neighbours houses. I decided to take care of my friends next door as they have a big family full of large men.
However my new inlaws although not discussed have very full cupboards. A much larger veg garden with a river. And a bigger house. If we could get there we could mayber take our stuff in a trailor. Only about a mile but through a built up area. The trouble is theirs is harder to defend as anyone could come along the river and the neighbours can see the veg. They do have a guard dog though.
I guess it is a case of try to have as much knowledge as possible to make the best informed decisions.
