Hi all,
I always had an interest in the subject but never really got into it until 'SHTF' in early 2020; the pandemic experience made me re-think on what is needed to be prepared
I’m not a survivalist or bush-crafter and not really into conspiracy theories or zombie apocalypse theories. Just a rational guy forcefully turned into a prepper during the 2020/2021 pandemic, that wants to be prepared for different level of emergency (floods, fires, etc) and catastrophic events (earthquakes, tsunamis, volcano eruptions, etc..).
Hope to find like-minded people in this forum to learn from and swap ideas.
Cheers!

Re: New Prepper
Hello and welcome, we're all pretty rational here too - for the most part.
Re: New Prepper
Hello and welcome to the Forum.
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.
Re: New Prepper
Hi, welcome.
The most likely and most serious disaster we face is indeed pandemic. Covid is a coronavirus but actually influenza is or was regarded as most likely.
Other risks are listed here https://cheshireresilience.org.uk/docs/crfrisk.pdf
Note that malicious events like terrorism are listed below, in a separate table.
The UK government disaster preparedness page links to this.

The pandemic was a wake up call for many and a dress rehearsal for we preppers.
Not many 'survivalists' or 'bush crafters' here ( there are some). We are mostly ordinary folk who just want to be sensibly prepared for realistic situations. Swapping ideas is what we are good at. I look forward to your contributions.
Don't be shy, we welcome questions and answers.

Re: New Prepper
What is the difference between survivalism and prepping? I just looked it up and the wiki page for the two terms is the same page, so I'm not clear from that.
Re: New Prepper
IMHO, It's a subtle nuance. There is much overlap.
My opinion:----
Survivalists tend to be more militaristic and inclined to bug out or defend their patch with weapons. There objective: To survive, whatever it takes.
Preppers TEND to be more inclined to the peaceful preparation for calmly dealing with more everyday irritations or likely difficulties.

Preppers stock up on as many supplies that will last for months while survivalists don't. Instead, survivalists will try to survive using their acquired skills and available resources in their surroundings.

Preppers take a stockpiling approach, preparing for the unknown by gathering and hoarding everything they could need until society reemerges or they have established a homestead.
Many survivalists prepare to live a simple but challenging life. Preppers are more intent on preserving their current way of life.

Re: New Prepper
Right. I know some believe in bugging out at the start of societal breakdown. I don't agree with that. I only plan on doing it if I have to. If looters are raiding houses near me, one house after another, in armed gangs, maybe killing people who resist, or rendering them unconscious or incapacitated, I think I would be grabbing my bag and hiding in the woods for a few days 'til they'd done my street and moved on. Of course if possible I would get together with neighbours to defend our street, but that might not be possible.jennyjj01 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 21, 2023 1:31 pmIMHO, It's a subtle nuance. If I was getting mugged while bugged out I probably would try to defend myself, but I would try to avoid that if possible.
