Hi to all - Newbie here

Post by serendipity22 »

Hi everyone
Having lived in rural north Perthshire, basic food prepping comes quite naturally and just seems like common sense. Having been through the covid thing like everyone else and seeing how fast our world is changing (not for the better) I decided some changes needed to be made. I'm relocating to Northumberland (Hexham area) in a few weeks and looking forward to restarting life and prepping south of the border again. The only problem about prepping is that you have to bring it all with you when you move!

Welcome to the forum, serendipity. I hope the move goes well. Transporting it all a fair way like that is definitely an issue - best of luck.

Hi serendipity, we moved last year and like you would have had a lot of food stuffs to move. Partially solved the problem by eating all the canned goods and only moving the dried goods.

Hi  I'm not that far away, rural near Jedburgh. We moved 3 years ago from a biggish house to a tiny wee chicken coop, and had to stash preps all over the house then start munching our way through them

Hi from Manchester, welcome. I've let my food stocks run down in recent months, to get it all used up before expiry date. When I've used up a bit more, and sorted it all, I'll start stocking up again. I seem to have been buying a lot of pasta for prep, but not eating it that often.

Hi
Sorry not to have replied sooner - things getting really hectic with moving including various problems which are taking up a ridiculous amount of time. I know what you mean about running food stocks down - been trying to do that myself and like you I've realised I've got far too much pasta and I've not been eating it as it's carbs laden. I've also quite a few near expiry dates. I've actually had to take quite a lot of stuff down to our local foodbank and I'm going to have to review what I'm prepping once I get down to Hexham. I hate it when I overestimate how much I need/will eat of something and get it wrong. It's a continual learning process. I try to eat healthily but find that food companies keep changing the ingredients and then find they've added more nasties in things. It's incredible how much rape seed oil is in tins and jars now since the Ukraine war started and sunflower oil suddenly disappeared!

You just remined me to have some pasta. I make my own sauce to reduce the salt. I get about 5 meals worth when I make it, so I eat 1, put 2 in the fridge and 2 in a freezer drawer. I need to use up 2 frozen as they take up space. Plus I need to get using the pasta. You mentioned carbs. Is that for weight reasons? I lost 3 stone during 2021-2. I'm not really trying to lose any more, just not gain, but I still use a calorie counting app. It's good for meal planning. I just entered a few meals with cauliflower, need to use that up, then 2 pasta in a few days.
