Old Oil Lamp

Post by Medusa »

Having a bit of a clear out in the house, got rid of lots of stuff and found a lot of stuff we had forgotten about including this old oil lamp which was in the attic. From what I can gather it is either an old railway lamp or from a boat. It is in good condition, the wick is still there and still moves, but I cant quite work out how to replace the wick when needed. I presume that it will run off lamp oil? Any ideas folks? Will sve me buying another Feuerhand for now anyway. https://imgur.com/67Fj3cP https://imgur.com/IN2J6G3

It would seem that Toplicht are still in business so you could see if they have anything on their website and if not you could email them some photos and ask for advice.

That can work surprisingly well. I did that for an old model (1980s) sewing machine by Elna, and I got a personal reply 15 minutes later, with links to the correct manual and the correct place on their website to buy accessories. Really good firms are usually excellent at doing that sort of thing.

Thanks for the advice. In my defence I misread the name as Toplight and googled that, obviously without success. They have the same lamp but in copper so have emailed them for additional information. We tested it the other night and it works beautifully. Very happy to have it for emergency use and once I know the correct size of wick, will buy a few to keep in the stores.

If you measure the lamp wick that should give you a good starting point assuming its a flat one....

Often a coloured strip which wad the way if identifying original wicks but aftermarket won't usually match up

As for threading I usually dip about a cm of the tip in melted candle wax then squeeze it before bit cools to introduce it into the hole before slowly turning the wick adjuster
If your roughing it, Your doing it wrong ;)

Lack of planning on your part doesn't make it an emergency on mine
