Bleach maker

Post by pseudonym »

Any Forum members have one, seen one used one? Or is it too good to be true?

Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

Looks a bit like snake oil to me. Bleach is sodium hypochlorite (it's usually diluted) with the formula NaOCl. It can be produced from salt water by a process called electrochlorination but I don't think a 5v USB supply (even at 2 Amps) is going to produce much at all.

see https://www.eicstech.com/kb/process-che ... quirement/

Without going deep into the maths of it, it's going to be very slow and expensive, compared to buying a bottle of own-brand bleach.

Morrison’s Thin bleach, plain sodium hypochlorite, 85p a litre, for water sterilisation, 5ml to a gallon (check)
will usually kill all bacteria etc, for general cleaning and making Dakin’s solution for cleaning wounds (Yes really - google it).

It’s so cheap, keep it a year before it looses strength then tip it away.

One of the best and cheapest preps.

I have all the bleach I require at the moment, I was looking for a viable product for when it isn't available.

Bleach has been manufactured commercially for 250 years. If it can be made with 18th century equipment, it is going to take a LOT for it to disappear completely for very long. Chemists everywhere will find a way to bucket chemistry it in a back yard if it is needed and saleable.

And that was my original question is this device viable?

If so, I won't need a back yard chemist to produce it for me at a price they set.

IF the gadget is as stated which you would only find out by buying it then in theory it would convert salt water into bleach. BUT the standard byproducts are bleach, chlorine and hydrogen whch are all somewhat dangerous. And the anode and cathode will take wear according to normal electrolytic theory so it may not last very long or generate large amounts of bleach.
Have a look at this article aimed at school science experiments to understand more.

Seeing as no member has replied I'll take that as a no.

Thanks.
