Goin' Fishing

Post by dizzydays »

ok here with go with the dumb questions. I did warn ya!
I know nothing - absolutely nada - about fishing, but if the food prices go through the roof and I can't find one of Janso's elephants, I'm thinking fishing would be useful.

So, without getting a boat, the way I see it is I could fish off rocks/beach or find a river.
So - what sort of kit would I need? Would one of Lidls cheap sets do the trick?
Could I use the same kit for both beach and river?
Is there a river in Cornwall? Strewth - note to self - find the map!
Is there an idiots guide?
Should I just marry a fisherman?

One of lidls cheap sets would be ideal if you are an absolute beginner, virtually everything you need and very cheap. If you got on with it you could gradually replace bits with better quality stuff as and when.

Fishing from the beach/rocks etc is free and you dont need a license (yet), fishing on a river requires a rod license and permission from the land owner...plus if you are after salmon or Trout etc (to eat) you might have to pay again for a "game" license, you do on the part of the river exe that I live next to.

Definitely a great skill to learn though and there are plenty of websites around with advice for the beginner fisherman/woman

Bat your eyelashes at a nice older type fisherman donw on the beach fixing his nets...ask questions .. if nothing else then he'll give you some fish everytime he sees you !
My dad used to borrow a wee boat and sit just outside the harbour mouth with a few lines out . He sometimes got some much mackeral he had to give loads away. And also crab. But lobster is very much a big boys game and they get territorial about their pots
He used to take my kids out fishing for "podleys" - I never found out what podleys are

Beach casting is good for down here Lizzy, never been much of a fisherman myself, but off the beach and cliffs (go safe) offer an abundance in the right areas that are sheltered. Have you thought about going down Newlyn and having a chat?? Failing that, the cobblers (taxis) running from St Michaels Mount are a friendly bunch, get over there and have a chat. Strike up conversation with the sea fishing boats and see what links can be made ;)

Ok....Think I'll have a chat with a few knowledgeable folks and see whats what. There certainly seems to be other food around too. On the dog walks I see rabbits by the million and quite a few pheasant. Maybe I could swap for the fish!

Only take pheasant at night on the quiet, otherwise landowners tend to get nasty  Although after TSHTF who cares? take what you can

I was reading on another site about something that you can put in the water that shocks the fish and kills them in small area then dissipates so it doesn't kill everything in the river/canal/pond/lake.
It was harmless to humans.

Obviously this would only be post SHTF. Does anyone know what it is as I can't remeber and can't find the page again.

It wasn't dynamite before the jokes start coming in, although that would work post SHTF.
