Blackcurrants

Post by hobo »

Started picking blackcurrants on my allotment this morning. Got about 10lbs in 2 hours. I reckon there's another 50 - 60lbs on the bushes.....so now I'm starting to panic! HELP!! What the heck am I going to do with them all? I have about 20 kilner jars so that's 20lb(ish) taken care of making jam. Ideas please! Thanks.

if you freeze them on trays and then when frozen bag them up and add to crumbles, pies etc as and when you want.

How about blackcurrant wine or cordial?

If you have a dehydrator you could make fruit leather. Yummy ;)

Or just sell them to Ribena. I have seen a few on their adverts get run over so they might appreciate the extra ones.

Be lucky (and fruity)

Yes, freezing them is a GREAT idea. I sometimes take natural yoghurt to work for brekkie - chuck in a handful of frozen berries and by the time I get there and sorted out the berries have defrosted and ready to eat - yum!

Got me a 'Lakeland My Kitchen Food Dehydrator' for my birthday! Read up online...SO MUCH ADVICE(HELP!!)...in the end I just spread out a few pounds of washed blackcurrants, crossed my fingers and switched the machine on! The result.....FANTASTIC!
Going to seal them in Mylar... or would a vacuum sealer be better?
Over to the panel....
