Need help with Mylar bags
Need help with Mylar bags
I'm planning to get some Mylar bags to store food in, but I've never used them before and was wondering if someone could tell me how to use them? Specifically, what do you do with the oxygen absorbers (what size do you use, how many per bag etc?) I'm planning on getting some 5kg capacity bags, but don't know what size or how many oxygen absorbers I'd need per bag. I'm just getting myself confused trying to figure it out lol.

Yeah it’s something I’ve been putting off, partly because it sounded a tad complicated.Teapot wrote:I'm planning to get some Mylar bags to store food in, but I've never used them before and was wondering if someone could tell me how to use them? These might help a bit with getting your head around mylar bags/storage. Must say Teapot, nothing like jumping in with both feet!

Re: Need help with Mylar bags
Thanks guys!
Have any of you got food stored in Mylar bags? I'm just wondering if you can put stuff in them in their original packaging so you can fill one bag with a few different things... For example, do you know if you can successfully store say, a bag of rice (in the plastic bag it comes in) with a bag of beans and a bag of sugar, all in one Mylar bag? Or do you have to take them out of the original bags? A 5kg bag is quite big if you're just storing some salt for example.

Hi there is a store on ebay uk that sells mylar bags and has reviews on mylar bags and oxygen absorbers - which gives information on how they work etc. I have put the link here for you to read about mylar bags and oxygen absorbers

Thanks for that - that's really helpful!
Does anyone know if you have to take food out of its original packaging before putting it in mylar bags? I need to know if you can put several different items in one bag.
Re: Need help with Mylar bags
From what I’ve read in most cases its best to take it out of the original packaging, as it prevents the oxygen absorbers doing their job, so it's probably best to buy smaller mylar bags, for each item.Teapot wrote: Thanks for that - that's really helpful!

Re: Need help with Mylar bags
Thanks That's what I thought would probably be the case... but I'm having trouble finding any smaller ones (other than really, really small ones for herbs and stuff).Triple_sod wrote:From what I’ve read in most cases its best to take it out of the original packaging, as it prevents the oxygen absorbers doing their job, so it's probably best to buy smaller mylar bags, for each item.Teapot wrote: Thanks for that - that's really helpful!

Re: Need help with Mylar bags
You can cut them down to smaller sizes and just seal the cut edges the same way as you would the top of the original bag.Teapot wrote:Thanks That's what I thought would probably be the case... but I'm having trouble finding any smaller ones (other than really, really small ones for herbs and stuff).
