Packed Lunch Vs Shop Bought

Post by itsybitsy »

I always thought that taking a packed lunch worked out much, much cheaper than buying a sandwich from a shop. But when I worked out the cost today, by the time I factor in my lunch ingredients (tuna, sweetcorn, bread or wrap, mayonnaise, foil, salad ingredients) it doesn't work out any cheaper than buying the same thing from a shop on campus! Plus, I have to make up my lunch first thing in the morning before I go to work, which makes me want to heave, quite frankly!

Obviously the decreasing gap in the price differentiation has a lot to do with recent price rises in supermarkets. This time last year I thnk it would have been a different story. But still, food for thought (no pun intended) for those of us who eat lunch at work.

Yes, but at least you KNOW what is in your sandwhich, cant say the same for bought sarnies and they are usually on the most rubbishy starched commercial bread, unless you go to some deli type shop and then they charge you an arm and a leg for it.

Also, consider how many fillings you get from one tin of tuna, or slab of cheese. More than one day, or everyone in the family gets the same, so you're feeding 2, 3, 4 or more.

I always make my own - I know what goes into it. The kids always have packed lunch. The school meals are too expensive for how much my daughter would eat and at least I know she's having something decent.
When I've been on placement and I know the school has a microwave I take leftover pasta, rice or couscous and heat it up. Take a salad (homegrown of course) and a homemade roll - yum, yum!!

I use a tin of tuna each day for lunch. No time to bake bread at the moment, I'm afraid - too many other things on right now, and my salad crops aren't ready yet, what little of them I have this year. :(
