Book GB:- Permaculture: A Designers' Manual
Hello , I've been speaking with the importer of this book which I am this is the Best Single book to purchase on all things permaculture , it is quite pricey but I have managed to secure the following deal.
http://www.eco-logicbooks.com/index.cfm ... book_id=45
5 books Purchased = 20% Discount ( Free Postage+Packaging ) £56.00
10 books Purchase = 25% Discount ( Free Postage+Packaging ) £52.50
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0908 ... d_i=468294
I am going to run this Group Buy on several Forums as I think the interest will be varied and I do appreciate its a major Investment for a single large Manual.
< EDIT I asked a friend what he thought of this book:-
" Permaculture (Permanent Agriculture) is the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems which have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems. It is the harmonious integration of landscape and people providing their food, energy, shelter , and other material and non-material needs in a sustainable way. Without permanent agriculture, there is no possibility of a stable social order.
. . . . .
The philosophy behind permaculture is one of working with, rather than against nature; of protracted and thoughtful observation rather than protracted and thoughtless action; of looking at systems in all their functions rather than asking only one yield of them; and of allowing systems to demonstrate their own evolutions."
This is what I said to TeeDee about the book: "I wish I had read it before I got my plot of land (seriously), I would definitely have made completely different decisions regarding placement of plot in the landscape, and definitely made different decisions regarding where in the country I was aiming for. It's A4 full on reference book, it'll take a couple of months to read it (at least)! it is fascinating and therefore easy reading for the most part. You could spend your money on ten other PC books thinking it was better value (as I did for too long) and still not get the info in the DM, it has completely changed some of my thinking even after the doing the full course."
The course I refer to is the Permaculture Design Course, a 72 hour (two weeks or split up over months) course which covers the contents of the book, with practical design exercises, and practical skill modules e.g. surveying equipment, how to draw contour plans, soil testing etc. run by experienced permaculture designers.

Ouch! That's a hell of an investment, would it not be a little advanced for the majority if us or does it cover the basics up?

Its , Accordinging to those in the Know , THE manual for Permaculture from start to finish,
I do appreciate its a quite a bit for a book ( or maybe not depending on your taste and pockets ) but I've been informed by many that its probably equivalent to 5 other books at least so is actually great value for money.
Right , I've asked my friend and he says the following;-
"yeah, those are the original works, written while Bill and David were still formulating their ideas (david was Bills uni student) in the late 70's, I've not read them, but I have flicked through them and read extensive passages, I would say the ideas are slightly disjointed, not as well defined, and not in any useful order either (not cohesive), whereas the DM is a complete work, well laid out with proven ideas written after Bill had done a lot more research and practical projects, IMO of course, you can find many deliberations on the pro's and cons of all the books and history of the movement on the web with a bit of googling, but the DM is well recognised (and still in print since oringal publishing in 1988) as THE permaculture book. "
Hope that answers your question
Re: PERMACULTURE Book Group Buy
This is a book I would be interested in BUT its the wrong time of year. There is no way I could justify that expense with the OH just before christmas.
Thank you for trying to organise a group buy TeeDee

Re: PERMACULTURE Book Group Buy
I think its a way of working with nature as opposed to against it so we use the land and resources in the best possible way, therefore not stripping away the quality. This will be the way forward as we need to return to traditional farming to be able to feed ourselves. I believe these are skills that were used by generations of growers but without the fancy name. The basics are important - getting that right is half the battle - I have made many mistakes over the few years we have been growing but want to improve what I do. This book may be the one that helps me best. I find many other books far too limited.TomW wrote:Ouch! A quick bump for this!! Anyone new to the forum or otherwise interested out there???
Re: PERMACULTURE Book Group Buy
I have this book, it's pretty intense if you're new to the subject. The author has written more books before this that are shorter and more of an introduction (Permaculture One and Permaculture Two)
Another large book about Permaculture is Patrick Whitefield's Earth Care Manual. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Earth-Care-Manu ... 838&sr=8-1 I've not got it (on the 'to get' list) but have had access to it at a library for a couple of hours. It's aimed specifically at britain's climate (whereas Mollison is an Australian)
