For those who plan to stay home and ride out whatever storm is occurring to the outside world
What are your reasons for choosing this path?
Is simply you don’t have a option as the countryside is too far away or you don’t have experience of it enough to be confident to be able to scrap a living there?
How do you intend to protect you home from looters? gather rain water if need be? where will you put your human waste? etc
Buggin In
Re: Buggin In
All my stuff is where I live, bugging out may happen once my supplies are running low, or I'm having issues with the locals that can't be dealt with.
I keep razor wire, tar, epoxy and glass. The plan is to cover all my walls and windowsills with glass, run razorwire though the bushes if it gets bad (keep everything blended in).
I can hold out for a year, if its not improved by then I have an additional 6 months and a list of places to go.

Re: Buggin In
What ones strategy is, will depend dramatically on what one is preparing for. I don't think we can ever say that there is just one path.
It will vary depending on the circumstances too.

Re: Buggin In
Are you aware that if you don’t leave a major city and its surrounding area within the first couple of hours of any major event you will most likely never leave as the roads will be jammed and closed.
The other homes on your street will soon be emptied and ransacked and yours will remain barricaded and secure, this will light it up like a beacon to the hungry and desperate who will then try every trick in the book to get in...
If they fail they will probably set fire to your home, do you have any methods or planning should this occur? Its pretty much impossible to stop someone torching your house then thats it, game over.
Depending on the seriousness of the event it’s pretty likely mass desertions will occur in the police and the army (this happened in Katrina) leaving not enough manpower to defend food stores AND patrol the streets. There will be no law and no fear of the law.
Would you walk to the 24 hour garage alone in your area if every street light was out? If you concerned about crime now that about sums it up.
How will your area deal with this? Are you concerned about lawlessness now? if you are than what about post event?

Re: Buggin In
That's why I don't live in a major city.
I regularly walk the alley way at the back of the house with the street light out, in fact it is out tonight, again, the 24 hr garage is 100mtrs away and we have been known to go there at all hours, especially after a night out.
There are only a dozen houses in my street, most people don't even know where the street is, even those living within a mile.
I have fire blankets and extinguishers to deal with fires, and plenty of other fire killing options.
We have no problems with lawlessness on any thing much bigger than a saturday night pub brawl.
I don't need roads to leave where I live, plenty of foot-paths around here going down alleyways, across fields and all of a half a mile to the open countryside.
Next question?

Re: Buggin In
For me buggin in is the priority due to my family. We aren't in a city, the population density is moderate so some factors are lower risk for me than bugging out would be.
Eventually every prepper will stand out, no matter your preparation plan as the longer any SHTF situation goes on, the more apparent any difference in health, comfort etc will be. That's not to say I don't do stuff to remain below the radar but I am realistic enough to know that my plans have to evolve over time dependant on the situation evolution.

Re: Buggin In
People in cities are going to have a problem, we saw that with the recent riots. the rest of us who live in the countryside in small towns and villages will be ok for some time after, whether we bug out or not will depend on how things pan out, we dont have a crime problem here normally, just the odd "domestic", i really dont want to bug out immediately because i am sure we cant carry all we need to take just in a couple of rucksacks( ok if we can drive out but walking out is different), having said that i can walk out of my house and within 2 minutes i am in the Devon countryside, leaving all the people behind me.
Re: Buggin In
Yup, I'm bugging in.
Reasons.#Live in the middle of nowhere.
Have septic tank.
Collect rainwater already in 6 water barrels. There's also a well somewhere on the proerty, but I haven't found it yet.
I was brought up the old fashioned way. I'm perfectly happy in my surroundings and have the skills and knowledge(thanks mum and dad!) to cope where I am.
I have a plan to make my house"grey"
However I've said it before, I would only last a few weeks once my medication ran out. So the next person to rummage through my property would find a goodly stash and a dead old Fartess!

Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain~anon
Re: Buggin In
Interesting one this. I am lucky to live in a medium size rural village, the place I was born and which I know well. I have well stocked pantry(s),very well laid out gardens, water harvesting etc. etc.
In short,I am not leaving. I am unwilling to discuss security here, but that is in place too.
Given that gvt. advice is 'Go in,Stay in,Tune in' I do not think "travellers" or refugees will be well thought of in the early days of a social problem.
My personal take on the whole topic of staying or leaving is this:
If I try to get to another place than home, then I may be straying onto someone elses patch. I would not want that on my land, any more than them.
Obviously one never says never, but Home is certainly the most attractive option.

In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.
