anyone got ideas for room fortification or attic/loft hideaways
edit
i do know about dangers of lofts and fire escapes/routes of escapes.
just thinking of a stronghold room.
room fortification
Re: room fortification
Yeah lots off the top of my head but depends on house type, age, location, height, spare space, foundations, geology of the area, etc., etc.
Are you wanting a 'safe room' an armoured room, and extra room/hideaway?
Lofts can be overcome with velux windows and wire ladders, depends on height from roof to adjacent building/ground level etc., and how much cash you have to spare of course.

Re: room fortification
housing association house,
so no windows
an no spare cash
its a detached house in theory
the main body is detached from next door but theres a ground floor extension which is to the left of the front door an that is attached to next doors house.
when our house was built they took some of next doors garden an built a 2 room ground floor extension for a disabled tenant ,who then never took the house
so we have a house with 3 rooms on ground floor plus the kitchen and a toilet and a bathroom and 2 double rooms and a box room upstairs.
there is a loft upstairs and also downstairs in the extension as well.
when you look out in the garden next doors brick shed is side ways on in our back garden with a fence running from it to our extension
oh its roughly 10 years old flat land .local areas wettish ,loads of flying insects

Re: room fortification
What about fire? Unless you have some serious money how will you stop people burning you out? I would hate to back into a safe room unless it was to keep some valuables safe before the police turned up. In a SHTF scenario I would never feel safe backing into a box... I would rather defend in the open with options to retreat.moocher wrote:anyone got ideas for room fortification or attic/loft hideaways

Re: room fortification
Also depends on whether anyone actually knows there's a safe room there.
Your main prob is it being a housing association place, I'd imagine that pretty much shackles you with regard to digging out a basement or blocking off access to an attic except via a hidden entrance?
I live in a basement flat, yet I have a basement that goes down a bit and out under the road, if it weren't for the door no one would ever know, it'd be easy to conceal and the landlord lets me do pretty much whatever (told him once I was gonna dig through it and get to the air raid shelters below and he said go for it lmao), if in an attic there has to be ventilation, heat proofing (sounds daft I know but been up there in summer), and an escape route, wire ladder is ideal, easy to anchor, don't weigh alot and easy to lauch out of a hatch/window to escape fire, whatever.

Re: room fortification
ta chef i know what your saying ,
they are sweat inducing hot in summer and cold/damp in winter,
the extension loft is ideal as stash room as you would not expect one there and a sari or similar over the ceiling would hide trap hatch.

Perfick
Often see those umm, like swags, ceiling drapes whatever, in extension sun rooms and stuff, who's gonna look behind them for a gap in the roof?
An actual safe room I'd do in the attic on a 2 storey house, have a velux window and the wire ladder for escape and have it insulated, top and bottom to stop the excessive heat/cold and just make a false panel to bring up behind you, if someones gonna ransack the house they'll go for the easy stuff and be off rather than spend however long looking for an entrance to an attic they can't see easily.

how many would bother with looking in them, they would have to be determined.
Re: room fortification
Gotta be honest when I was doing building work, eons ago, the last place I wanted to be doing anything was the attic, especially when re-wiring, back then it was all the fibreglass insulation, most attics probably still are unless corporate owned so I doubt most would even bother, all I ever put in the attic was junk I had no room for, camera equipment, backdrops, lighting, 'projects' I never got round to, books, who would bother honestly?
