Found this great blog (via survivalblog.com) on a guy who welded together 2 x 40ft containers to make a 2 bed home. Theres good photos of the whole process and gives you a great idea of the amount of work involved. Seems to me the final build is one of the better ones i've seen, especially by a DIY'er rather than a professional company.

Interesting idea.... and he's going to have a years worth of food stored which is good.
But that house is on some really poor soil. Looks like a children's sandpit. It would be very hard to grow anything at all in that.
Hope he is also building some raised beds and is building soil like a madman - because if the SHTF lasts longer than a year he has not got a lot of options.
To my mind (I think we are heading for an epic multi-decade sh*t storm) investing in a garden is absolutely essential.

When I was working offshore we often docked in Amsterdam, just outside the harbour here is an apartment block for student made out of containers. Since then it has often crossed my mind to use then for a BOG shelter and store.
Re: Excellent step-by-step container house
Sea containers are very popular in Canada right now and not only with preppers. If you drove around the small town in which I live (approximately 500) you would find many containers. Probably more than a dozen. They come in many sizes, some you would recognize and some you would not. One guy built a beautiful garage from one. He built a regular roof over the top of it and put siding on it. When he was finished it looked like a regular garage, except I suspect it is much stronger. It was compliant with the building code. They are also popular for sheds and general storage units.
Among preppers, especially those with the "bunker mentality" they are popular as a buried bug out location. I haven't seen too many in cities or larger population centers probably because of local bylaws.
