Myler Bags?

hi there,
just starting out and looking to start with the basics, flour, salt, grains and pulses etc. Are the Myler bags worth shelling out for? :D :?:

Have managed to answer my own question - the LDS website (dont know why I didn't check them first!) They have 1 gallon bags that should store around 3.5 kilos of flour. The price is amazing £58 for 250 bags! Still have to buy the oxygen thingies though and as a member I have access to our local bag sealer (bonus) but much cheaper than the Myler bags. Also quite like the size of them so when we are rotating we don't open huge bags and have spoilage.

i have mylar bags and a food saver machine . i`m at the moment looking into food saver bags . the machine vac packs with out the o2 absorber , that way i can see if its sealed ok rather than having to wait and see . i`m thinking of sealing it then putting it into mylar to keep the light out , but not a big deal if its not air tight .
YES i walked away mid sentence , you were boring me to death and my survival instincts kick in .

The FoodSaver bags are fine. They are 'barrier bags' exactly like the Mylar bags except that they use a transparent plastic barrier to block Oxygen penetration (Oxygen goes through Polyethylene but not through others like Nylon. Mylar uses a thin Aluminum layer to do the same job). Barrier bags are made up of layers, a foodsafe layer inside, an Oxygen barrier, a humidity barrier and a tough protective outer layer for strength. Some barrier bags use seven layers.

You need the Oxygen absorber as the little bit of oxygen that does diffuse through the barrier (Oxygen will penetrate ANY barrier bag a little) on a daily basis needs to be 'soaked up' before it can damage the stored item.

The life of the packaging is determined by the amount of Oxygen that diffuses through the barrier bag and the size of the Oxygen absorber used. It would be possible to use a glass jar and a huge absorber but then the packaging would last beyond the life of the food itself, a waste of money.
