wine as a prep item
wine as a prep item
instead of just asking i did a little bit of research http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index ... 541AAhdTQT thought instead of just bottling water , wine would also be good as a prep item , the general consensus is that white will only last a couple of years , but reds may last longer i,e more expensive what are members experience of storing wine? any suggestions ? may eventually start brewing it
Re: wine as a prep item
Probably a good thing. If you meet an alky who has some food to swop. Might want to look into other alcoholic beverages too. And tobacco is another one that some people recommend.

Re: wine as a prep item
I'd love to "prep" wine a good sized cellar full would warm the cockles on many a cold night, but sadly my prepping finances wouldn’t allow it. I have thought of making my own it's not as if we have a shortage of Elderberry's up here in the north, flowers for white an the berries for red. I've thought about storing some of the tinned mixes but then I'd have to find space for demijohns and all the rest of the stuff. As far as alcohol goes I'll just keep a couple of bottles of single malt!

You don't have to make tonnes of the stuff, just a little each month and store itmongrel wrote:I'd love to "prep" wine a good sized cellar full would warm the cockles on many a cold night, but sadly my prepping finances wouldn’t allow it. Any one know about Gin I'm not to keen on that so would be able to keep it for longer than wine or beer

I hate it too unless its had sloes steeping in it for a time. Should have an indefinite storage life like any other spirit.junmist wrote:Any one know about Gin I'm not to keen on that so would be able to keep it for longer than wine or beer
Re: wine as a prep item
I hadn't really thought about this aspect of prepping! The only problem would be actually stockpiling enough wine without the inevitable 'leakage'!
Re: wine as a prep item
I like to keep a largish supply of empty wine bottles around for the day when I might have to make and bottle my own wine (raspberry wine, dandelion wine etc). I don't have time to do more than dabble in that area at the moment but I can imagine situations in which having a useable collection of bottles would be useful.
Once I built a wine rack for the empty bottles, I decided I might as well just store full ones instead in the theory that since I want to keep a supply of bottles to hand anyways, they might as well have something in them. Now the wine bottle rack is never allowed to have an empty slot. If I don't have a full one available I keep empty ones in there. I suppose I could fill the empties with water to keep a supply of that to hand as well - but I have a surreal amount of water butts already and it never stops raining here anyways.
For much the same reason I also maintain a supply of the those Grolsh swing top resealable beer bottles.

Thats a point. i am sure I have seen some fizzy fruit juices called "Adagio" or something similar at the 99p stores.... in what looks like fizzy wine type bottles. And they sell for 99p which is most convenient. maybe if I get myself one of them a week and store the bottles . . . . Get some more nutrients, yeast and corks and follow a potcheen recipe, I could have myself a potato wine on the cheap and bottled nice and cheap.
